The health care team at Waismann Method® urges immediate government action at local, state, and federal levels to reduce and prevent more fentanyl overdose deaths.
LOS ANGELES, Calif., Nov. 24, 2021 – In light of the recent CDC data regarding the alarming number of drug overdoses and as part of an ongoing commitment to combat the opioid crisis, the Waismann Method® team called for immediate and much broader recovery strategies, including effective medical detoxification, accessible mental health care, and nationwide prevention measures.
According to the latest CDC provisional data, over 100,000 Americans died of a drug overdose in 12 months. Experts presume that the rise in fatal overdoses is directly linked to the COVID pandemic and the influx of fentanyl into the country. Unfortunately, this number is expected to be underestimated, and evidence shows that future data will likely be much grimmer.
“The large number of people calling us, describing the vast number of friends and relatives overdosing on fentanyl is alarming,” said Clare Waismann, RAS/SUDCC, founder of Waismann Method and Domus Retreat. “The social isolation created by the pandemic and the never before seen availability of illicit fentanyl in this country had only made a terrible situation much worse. A crisis that will take a multi-facet, steep and immediate approach to change its trajectory and save people’s lives.”

Waismann stressed that while pharmaceutical-grade fentanyl has an effective clinical use when prescribed by physicians, its illicit form has become the most common and deadly drug in the streets, leading to an alarming rise in overdose deaths. Law enforcement agencies across the country warn that counterfeit pills can appear identical to legitimate prescription medications, which makes it nearly impossible to know whether internet-purchased or street-purchased pain pills have been laced with fentanyl. Other drugs, including cocaine, methamphetamine, benzodiazepines, and now, even marijuana, are often laced with fentanyl, causing those with no tolerance to opioids to be at a much higher risk of death.
