Avid fisherman Brandon Anderson discusses the top fishing locations around Sarasota, Fla.
SARASOTA, FL / JULY, 2020 / Florida is a state known for its iconic fishing locales, from the Atlantic Coast to the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean-like waters of the Keys. However, Sarasota is a city that is listed time and time again as a top home base for fishing adventures. Avid fisherman Brandon Anderson of Sarasota recently offers his top fishing locations in the area.
“Sarasota offers some of the best fishing in the state,” Brandon Anderson said. “That’s because our area offers so many bodies of water, from freshwater inland lakes to deep seas of the Gulf, and the Intracoastal Waterway.”
Brandon Anderson explained that few Florida towns offer fishing locations as diverse as Sarasota. He praised Longboat Key as one of his favorite fishing destinations in the area. Brandon Anderson explained that New Pass is one of the three passes connecting the Gulf of Mexico with Sarasota Bay. New Pass is the section between Lido and Longboat Keys, featuring a bridge that’s ideal for casting a line and bringing home dinner.
“One of my favorite scenic places to fish with the family is Bird Key Park. It offers some of the most stunning views of the city from a grassy coastal paradise,” Brandon Anderson said. “The seawalls and grass beds create a hotspot for wide variety of fish, so you’re rarely catching the same type of fish every time you visit.”
Brandon Anderson added that deep sea fishing is one of the best ways to bring a big catch back to your home or hotel in Sarasota. He stated that the city offers numerous charter companies with experienced captains who know where to go given the daily conditions. Brandon Anderson emphasized that every fisherman visiting Sarasota should venture at least 20 miles out into the Gulf with an experienced guide. This is where fishermen come home with the biggest hauls.
“Those who want to stay closer to land can enjoy an evening on the Venice Fishing Pier at Casperson Beach,” Brandon Anderson said. “Fishing here is free, and there’s just something exciting about the fishing culture on the pier. Reel in a flounder, jack, or mackerel, and watch as others do the same.”
Brandon Anderson added that pier fishing is excellent for the entire family. Fishing licenses aren’t needed on this pier, and there’s a bait shop at the center of the pier offering everything from live bait to rods, reels, and more. Brandon Anderson explained that this is an ideal place for everyone from beginners to experts and is even enjoyable for those who don’t fish at all. The views are incredible and simply watching others reel in whatever is swimming down below is almost as enjoyable as reeling one in yourself.
