Hair loss and scalp burns are side effects that nobody should experience after coming home from a beauty salon. After improperly applied product, Fort Worth Woman, Robin Gunby, settled her case for $180,000 after suffering permanent hair loss and scalp burns after the procedure left her partially bald.
Before visiting the Regis salon, Gunby had very healthy hair and was going in for a standard cut and coloring. The routine visit went well until she began to experience burning on her scalp and skin lesions after she got home. Soon after, she noticed that clumps of her hair began falling out due to improperly applied product.
When misused, salon treatments can have detrimental effects on hair, stunting growth, causing permanent hair loss, scalp burns, and have been linked to skin cancers and other diseases. Hair loss and scalp burns can result in thousands of dollars in damages for wigs, emotional support, and loss of enjoyment of life damages.
Symptoms of hair loss include:
If not monitored strictly, injuries can occur anywhere from the sanitation of tools, improper use of goods, or failure to test products. Beauty salon injuries are not uncommon, and even minor scrapes, burns, or rashes can turn into significant infections if not handled properly.
Beauty salon incidents are not strictly limited to hair loss or scalp burns but can be attributed to a variety of incidents such as ear burns, curling iron accidents, scarring related to burns, and 1st-degree burns.
Beauty salon claims can be brought against the misuse of products as well. In 2014 a woman was awarded $10.2 million in damages following the misuse of a TRESemme shampoo and conditioner.
State officials strictly monitor salon procedures, but if they are not appropriately managed, salons can cause a variety of injuries, including:
Gunby introduced a claim against the Regis Corporation following a stay that produced skin irritations and burning of her scalp. After visiting the Emergency Room at Texas Health Southwest, she was prescribed antibiotics and topical creams, but the condition did not improve.
In Spring 2018, a dermatologist diagnosed Gunby with permanent hair loss and baldness due to the stylist’s negligence in applying hair products.
The attorney representing Gunby, Randall Knutson, says that “Extreme care must be taken when using relaxers and applying hair coloring. The chemicals involved can be dangerous and have detrimental effects if not applied properly. It is more common than most people think”.
Knutson + Casey settled the case in a lawsuit filed against the Regis Corporation for negligence and misuse in applying hair products for $180,000.
