Tift County Resident Secures Bell Law Firm After Deceased Mother’s Heart Attack Went Untreated
ATLANTA – August 30, 2021 – Lloyd Bell of Bell Law Firm today confirms the filing of a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of Jason Doggett in Tift County against Southwell Incorporated and Tift Regional Medical Center (“Tift”) following negligence leading to the death of his mother, Charlene Doggett.
In February 2020, Charlene arrived at Tift on an ambulance, suffering from chest pain. Cardiologist Paul Murray discovered that her heart was healthy with the exception of a complete blockage in her right coronary artery. Instead of referring her to a hospital with the capabilities to clear or bypass the blockage, Tift sent Charlene home without informing her of the problem.
The following morning, she returned to Tift suffering a major heart attack. Although her tests and symptoms repeatedly confirmed the heart attack, Dr. Murray and Tift did nothing to treat it. Instead, Charlene was told to “push through the pain.” As a result, Charlene died at Tift that night from an untreated heart attack. In this lawsuit, Jason alleges that individual and systemic failures at Tift were the cause of his mother’s death.
“A heart attack is a medical emergency that requires prompt diagnosis and care, so for the health care providers at Tift to ignore the signs and send Charlene Doggett away without treatment is an act of negligence that goes against the most basic protocol,” states Lloyd Bell. “We know this lawsuit can’t bring Charlene back, but it’s a step in the right direction towards ensuring no other family endures what Jason and his family have experienced.”
Charlene was a loved and respected member of the community, evidenced by the more than 100 people who attended her viewing and the local restaurant that commemorated her birthday after her death. Charlene is survived by four siblings, Jason and his wife Carrie, and their four children.
