XtraTime Web Desk: 21 year old Sikh spinner Amar Virdi is looking to follow the footsteps of former England cricketer Monty Panesar. Virdi is now in the 30 member England provisional squad training the Ageas Bowl ahead of next month’s home series against West Indies.
Sharing his thoughts during a virtual press conference Virdi said, “Growing up I watched (spinners) Graeme Swann and Monty Panesar bowling, that was inspirational to me.”
“I definitely want to be playing in the first Test and I want to be in the squad,” said Virdi, who claimed 69 wickets from 23 first class matches.
“If I didn’t want to do that I probably shouldn’t be here,” he added.
“I’m very proud of myself that I’ve got to this stage. The next stage is about pushing for a Test place and whenever that does happen, I’m going to keep working hard.”
Left-arm spinner Panesar played 50 Tests for England between 2006 and 2013, before mental health issues put a full stop in his career.
