Aren’t you uncomfortable with photos of yourself being uploaded to SNS without your knowledge?
Once the photos start flowing on the net, you can’t control them yourself. If you could say “Don’t Upload Me” in the photo …
“XPAND Declaration”™ is a new platform where you can declare how your photos should be treated. The T-shirt we introduce here is XPAND Declaration’s first product.
Point the XPAND Code® at the Camera
Bring your right, left, or both arms forward. The slit-shaped barcode “XPAND Code” on the sleeve of the T-shirt will be visible from the front. Please use this pose so the camera can capture the XPAND Code.
Read XPAND Codes with Smartphone
Read with a smartphone app that supports XPAND Code. XPAND Codes can be read directly off of a person, and off of a person in a photo.
You Can See the Declaration
“Don’t Upload Me” is displayed on this product. Responses are not limited to smartphones. Messages in JSON format can also be returned to other servers via exchange with the XPAND Code server.
Currently, two services are available:
With current AI technology, it is easy to identify and read XPAND Codes in images, to extract only people wearing the T-shirts, and to process their images.
In other words, many ICT companies can immediately begin reading XPAND Codes in photos and videos, and automatically process your portrait according to your declaration.
Looking ahead, we want to involve various people and companies and realize the following in the near future.
Most Advanced SNS – A warning appears if you try to upload a photo that contains the “Don’t Upload Me” declaration.
Most Advanced Search Engine – Photos containing the “Don’t Upload Me” declaration will not appear in search results, and their cache will be deleted.
Most Advanced Smartphone – A warning will be displayed if you try to photograph a person displaying the “Don’t Upload Me” declaration.
Most Advanced Camera – The camera will blur any person you try to photograph who is displaying the “Don’t Upload Me” declaration.
Most Advanced Photo Processing Software – The “Content-Aware Fill” command automatically removes people who are displaying the “Don’t Upload Me” declaration.
First, we will launch this product in the form of a T-shirt, but by this summer we will release an XPAND Code issuing service that supports “XPAND Declaration”. Anyone can attach XPAND Codes to anything, so you can make “Declarations” on various products.
XPAND Code is a spatial link born from information design work in public transportation. It is a reinvention of the traditional EAN / UPC code.
Unlike QR codes, they have a slender shape, so they fit easily into various designs and are easy to read from long distances.
Tests at Japan’s largest football stadium recorded successful readings at 215m / 705ft.
In addition to cities and transportation, they are now being used for sports.
We were highly evaluated by the Japanese Government, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government etc. We participated in exhibitions in Berlin (TechRadar article), Jakarta, Munich, and Tokyo from late 2019 to early 2020, and are in cooperation with companies and organizations in China.
We will take your orders for colors and sizes after completion of the campaign.
Please refer to the samples below for T-shirt colors.
*Please note that the colors as they appear on the screen may differ from actual products
Products will be shipped worldwide from Tokyo, Japan.
Shipments will be made using SAL (Surface Air Lifted) services, but in areas where SAL shipments are not available, air mail will be used. Delivery times vary by area, but expected delivery is 2 to 3 weeks after shipment. In Japan, depending upon the package, we ship using Japan Post or courier.
Please note, many countries impose customs duties on goods from Japan, so you may have to pay duties to receive the products.
SVG data can be retrieved using the download password included with the T-shirt. If you have pledged a Digital Pack, you will be informed how to retrieve it after all T-shirts have been shipped. This is so that the T-shirts can be the stage for the “Premier Release” of XPAND Declaration. Thank you for your understanding.
The company was founded by creator NANMOKU Toworu (interview) who has worked in information design for Japan’s busses and railways including Tokyo Metro, as well as industrial design for EV charging stations, industrial robots, etc., and web system development.
Around 2010, we began work on linking station spaces with smartphones using QR codes in order to enhance information provision in subway systems, and from that emerged the XPAND Code project.
After trial and error, the XPAND Code was complete, and the services were launched in 2016. XPAND K.K., a company dedicated to XPAND Code, was established in 2017.

IMPACT OF THE SPREAD OF NEW CORONAVIRUS DISEASE (COVID-19) There is no impact on the product development schedule. However, if the spread of the COVID-19 has not ceased by the end of the campaign, factory production and shipping schedules may be significantly delayed. If the coronavirus attaches to a product, it is unknown how long it can survive. It is generally said that the virus will not survive more than 48 hours on cloth, and this product requires at least two weeks from shipment to arrival. Therefore, we believe that products will not arrive with the virus attached. However, there is a possibility that the virus has adhered to the outer packaging during transportation. When the package arrives, we recommend disinfecting and discarding the outer packaging immediately. For domestic shipments within Japan, we will adjust the shipping schedule to take into account the spread of the COVID-19 at the time of shipment. PRODUCT QUALITY: The T-shirt itself made by a long-established Japanese T-shirt manufacturer founded in 1930. It is manufactured in the company’s factory in China, but is subject to high quality control based on Japanese standards. However, since it is manufactured according to Japanese standards, the size and comfort of each part may differ from the T-shirts of other countries. Quality indication and washing instruction tags are also for use in Japan. Furthermore, since the material is 90% to 100% cotton, some shrinkage will occur due to washing and drying. Hand-washing is recommended because it is printed using the silk screen method. When using a washing machine, turn the T-shirt inside-out, and place it in a washing net. If the fabric is pulled too hard, the printing may crack. If there is a defect in the product, please contact us and return it. We will exchange it for a new one, free of charge. However, due to the nature of the product, we will only exchange a product if it has not been worn. READING XPAND CODES: The success rate of reading depends on several factors, such as ambient brightness, light direction, reflection, distance from the camera, camera resolution, and reading app performance. Because this is a cloth product, wrinkles and distortions can also cause read failure. Reading may not be possible depending upon such factors. In addition, the reading rate gradually decreases due to the deterioration of printing due to washing and wearing. SERVICES AND PRODUCTS THAT CAN USE XPAND DECLARATION: At the time of launch, XPAND Declaration did not work for services and products other than XPAND Code compatible applications. Without supporters, the number of services and products that can use this product may not increase. The more people support this product, the more likely it will be available in various services and products.
