A 6-year-old girl was struck and killed by a truck in South Carolina as she waited with her grandmother for her school bus to arrive. It was around 6:30 a.m. on February 28 when the incident occurred. According to sources, Jerrnia Horne was standing with Beatrice Mayson, her grandmother, at her assigned bus stop, which is something they did on a daily basis.
While the two were standing and waiting for the girl’s bus to pick her up, sources say a 39-year-old woman behind the wheel of a truck struck Horne while she was holding her grandmother’s hand. Mayson told an ABC News affiliate that they had been standing on the sidewalk just before the accident happened and that she saw a black truck approaching them.
After the accident, emergency medical personnel rushed Horne to Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte, NC. Unfortunately, she died that night as a result of her injuries. Horne was a student at Heath Springs Elementary School and was known to wait at that exact location each and every morning, either with her grandmother or a parent. Authorities say they are now investigating the incident but have not disclosed whether the 39-year-old woman will face charges for the fatal accident.
School Safety Director Bryan Vaughn had this to say after the accident: “Everything we do as school officials is first and foremost to take care of children and when we see a child get hurt in the community for whatever reason, I think it hurts everybody. This is one of the darkest days that you can have as a school employee.”
