UPDATES:
Kickstarter has selected us as a PROJECT WE LOVE! They have also made us PROJECT OF THE DAY! It’s been incredibly surreal being acknowledged as a special project with two Kickstarter recognitions!
What if everything important in your life is violently taken from you? Your family, friends, and your magical powers are gone. You awaken to a familiar but different world. You don’t know why this is happening. The only thing you know is that the monsters of New Orleans are involved.
Follow our hero, Jonas, as he battles these monsters to regain the life and powers he once had. But the things he will have to do may turn him into the same monster he is out to destroy.
This Kickstarter campaign is to fund the printing of issue #3. But don’t worry, you can also pick up issues #1-3 in this campaign!
There will be 28 pages of amazing black and white art and story with quality gloss paper that will make the artwork pop.
Gian Carlo Bernal is an artist and lives in the Philippines with his son and wife. In 2014 after 11 years as a graphic designer he left his job to become a comic book illustrator. He’s never looked back. Gian has drawn for other Kickstarter comic book campaigns such as the Last Days of Kevin and Ronin. He’s been quoted as saying “And now I am happy to be working on Crescent City Monsters. I will draw until I die, my body rot and I will come back as a zombie and draw comics again.”
Newton Lilavois is a Haitian-American who lives in New York City with his wife and daughters. By day he’s a computer programmer. When he’s not writing code, he’s writing stories.
As an eleven years old boy, Newton used to draw comics and sell them to classmates. As an adult Newton decided to fulfill his dream of creating comic books and Crescent City Monsters was born.
WHY DID I CREATE THIS STORY?
As a Haitian-American I wanted to introduce the rich Haitian Voodoo lore to comic books readers through more authentic lens. Mix that with my love for dark gritty stories and the urge to create a zombie story, and you have the delicious gumbo called Crescent City Monsters.
WHAT OUR FANS ARE SAYING:
“Newton Lilavois’s story keeps you hooked and eager to see its direction. With an amazing ending that leaves you wondering and wanting more. He has done an amazing job on mood, character personalities and over all story that never loses interest. Gian Carlo Bernal’s cover had me hooked at first sight. His detail and style is in a class of its own for me. As soon as you see it, you want to open the comic. And yes, the inside is as detailed as the cover. These two amazing guys are a hard hitting tag team destined for delivering great books.” – Tell Diam
CSM is simply one of the most amazing graphic works out there. Exciting, fast-paced and beautifully original writing combined with a visual style that is cinematic and truly visceral. This is truly powerful stuff and stands with the very best of its genre. No one would miss this! – Vic Casados
“Absolutely loved this amazing story and unique artwork!! Definitely look forward to the next chapter in this masterpiece from the dream fury crew.” – Chris Mason
“I love horror as a genre and I definitely think there should be more horror comics out there. I walk into a comic book store and there’s a tiny horror section if there is any. I also love the historical period setting crescent city monster is placed in. I definitely want to see where the story will go!” – Leona Kumagai
WHY KICKSTARTER?
Kickstarter is great for independent creators like myself who need access to funds and want to find an audience for their awesome projects. In 2018, when my first Kickstarter project was successfully funded, I was introduced to over 283 amazing new fans. In 2019, our second Kickstarter was even a bigger success with the help of 381 backers. Kickstarter has been an awesome platform to grow our audience.
I’ve been a Kickstarter backer since 2013 and I love the platform. I’ve backed over 180 projects. So, besides using the platform for my own creative endeavors, I believe in the idea of supporting other creators via crowdfunding on Kickstarter.
WHAT WILL THE FUNDS BE USED FOR?
Except for the lettering, issue three is complete. The artwork, lettering, and design is all paid for so the funds will be used for printing issue three and help pay for artist work of issue four.

THE PLAN
It’s really simple. We’re 90% completed with chapter three. We’re currently lettering the book. Once the Kickstarter campaign is finished and the funds have been received, the book should be complete. We’re then going to send the files to the printer so you can have the book in your hands at the scheduled delivery date.
We’ve been getting amazing feedback about the first and second issues. We’re excited about printing issue #3 for our fans. I’m looking forward to your support. I know with your pledges the campaign will be a success.
Thank You,
Newton & Gian

The biggest risk facing this project would be a delay with the printer’s production and shipping. This is my third Kickstarter and I’m familiar with the printing and shipping process so I believe my schedule is well thought out, Except for a few more minor editorial changes the comic book is done so backers will only be waiting for the printers and myself to ship the books out. I’ve taken steps like making sure the printer is shipping from within the United States to make sure slight delays will not throw us totally off schedule. I’ve also buffered some time in the delivery date for some unforeseen circumstances. I acknowledge that even with all that said there could be something beyond my control or the printer’s control that could cause a delay in fulfillment. In cases like this, I will communicate in a timely and consistent manner to keep my backers well aware of the situation.
