A CLARD is a cloth + a greeting card all in one — just wet it to transform into two reusable cleaning cloths that do the work of 3,000 paper towels.
If each household bought just one CLARD a year instead of an ordinary paper greeting card, we would save 20 BILLION rolls of paper towel in just 12 months. That would save 156 million trees and 195 billion gallons of water EVERY YEAR!
Best part, 100% compostable CLARDS never reach the trash can unlike most of the 7.5 BILLION dollars worth of paper greeting cards we buy every year.
Happy to be recognized!
Each CLARD has a removable binder with a greeting such as Happy Birthday, Thank You, Congratulations, and more. The body includes fun, uplifting graphics to enjoy for months, even years as a cleaning cloth.
Write your personal message with a fabric or permanent marker to make certain your message lasts. Unlike a traditional paper card that is thrown away and forgotten, a CLARD greeting can be remembered and enjoyed every day for months while cleaning up.
Receiving a CLARD is fun because you get a gift within a greeting! The back of the CLARD has simple instructions for use on the removable binder tape.
Each CLARD turns into two ultra-eco cleaning cloths ready to replace 3,000 paper towels. PostCLARDS do the work of 1,500. Just rinse, wring, and clean up anything. Launder in the dishwasher and sterilize in the microwave. CLARD cloths last months and months and clean amazingly well.
We often talk about plastic waste, but paper waste is a BIG problem too.
A mom from Minnesota has created solutions for two of the biggest paper waste problems—greeting cards and paper towels.
We love giving and receiving greeting cards in fact…
But…
…the great feeling often lasts only for a few moments and then maybe we display the cards for a few weeks or put into a shoebox to “save”. Eventually, they all end up in the trash.
There’s something about throwing away a greeting card that doesn’t feel right—especially those expensive pop-ups or the elaborate paper glittered greetings… but what else are we to send?
1 CLARD = 3,000 paper towels or 15 rolls of paper towel a year. 1 postCLARD = 1,500.

CLARD cloths absorb 20x its weight in liquid!
One of the best parts about CLARDs is that they never have to reach a landfill unlike a good portion of the 7.5 BILLION dollars’ worth of paper greeting cards we buy every year.
After they become worn from cleaning (which takes many months), compost them, or cut them up and add to plants to help keep moist or add some essential oils and vinegar and they become eco dryer sheets
CLARD cloths are perfect for quick cleanups in the kitchen, bath, or nursery. Even soft and safe enough to use on a baby’s sensitive skin!
At the same time…durable enough for the car, boat, camper, or spills at the grill.
Works well on dishes, countertops, pet paws, faces, stainless (yippee!), mirrors, and more.
Your purchase helps support the tree planting and educational initiatives of the Arbor Day Foundation.

Hi, I’m Carla Scholz and I don’t use paper towels. I am on a mission to help everyone consume less. As the daughter of life long environmentalists, I understand the value of taking care of our natural resources.
My father as a school superintendent, each year made certain everyone celebrated Arbor Day by planting trees. An idea I shared when my children were in elementary school. Today, Soak it Up supports the Abor Day Foundation to honor these traditions.
Soak it Up Cloths™ started with a friend while brainstorming ideas for new gift products. He brought a sample of sponge cloth because he knew we could create a line of products that people would love.
When I first touched the rigid sponge cloth I thought, “This is just like paper… they should be greeting cards, or postcards, or used for advertising, or almost anything that is made from paper.”
Focusing on fun, funny, regional designs Soak it Up Cloths product line has grown each year and can be found in countless gift shops around the Midwest. Soak it Up Cloths has allowed me to secure manufacturing, production, and distribution systems so that we can confidently produce CLARDS!
I love getting greeting cards, but I hate throwing them away—and most everyone I talk to agrees. I believe CLARDS are a disruptive alternative to traditional greeting cards and provide a practical, clever gift within a greeting.
Change starts with every one of us.
Please help us bring CLARDS to the mainstream while helping to reduce paper waste on our planet.
THANK YOU to family, friends and everyone who has supported this idea whether through excited words of encouragement, a tilted head of discouragement, nitty-gritty truthful feedback, a proud smile, modeling for photos, sitting through a pitch or two, taking photos, sharing ideas, telling others, writing, editing, or listening to rambling ideas, it is all greatly appreciated. Here are some of those wonderful people that did one or all of the above (in no particular order)
Emma Mueller, Philip Mueller, Phillip Mueller, Deb Hill, Peg Snow, George Snow, Jim Swanson, Ann Swanson, Jean Werremeyer, Teresa Thomas, Sheri Bennefeld, Todd Snow, Kim Schwartz, Sandra Hoyt, Horst Kraft, Lily Shaw, Cathy Paper, Daryoush Allaei, Shawn McClay, Bonnie Maron, Judy Ryan, Molly Raben, my siblings and their children and their children and anyone that has ever bought a Soak it Up Cloth! Organizations that helped & inspired include COSTARTERS, Legal Core, JJHill Center, Score, WE, and 1 Million Cups.
Thanks to my 92-year-old parents who have encouraged and inspired creativity my entire life. Whether it was making recycled paper in the blender or carving dozens of Halloween pumpkins at the kitchen table or more recently, feeding them unique plant-based meal concoctions, I’ve never heard a discouraging word. Thank you, Mom & Dad.
Very special thanks to Rakhi Nikhanj from Pauly, DeVries Smith & Deffner for her kindness, dedication, and hard work as the best patent attorney ever.
And THANKS to Tasha Mayberry for your long hours and dedication to making this Kickstarter happen. I could not have done it without you!
This is for my brilliant Philip & Emma who inspire, motivate, and guide my focus daily. Thank you.

We have worked hard to prepare this product and Kickstarter campaign to ensure final production of CLARDS are high quality and sustainable, but here are the risks and challenges: MANUFACTURING: We have vendors that we work with and are currently seeking additional resources. The risk associated with our manufacturing would not be the actual printing process but having the human resources to assemble the product. To minimize this risk, we are not going to fulfill website orders until Kickstarter orders are shipped. This way after the project is funded we will know exactly how many we need to produce. FULFILLMENT: Sometimes things happen that we don’t plan for – the printer is behind schedule, things are printed incorrectly or not to our standards, the materials get stuck in customs, shipments gets lost, etc. These could delay the fulfillment. To minimize the possibility of setbacks we have worked with our cloths supplier for many years via our Parent Company Soak it Up so we are confident the supplier will continue to be a credible partner that delivers materials on time. Also, since we have three years working with these special cloths and designing/printing on them, we have the process down pat from beginning to end. We have created multiple mockups of CLARDs to get a good understanding of lead times needed to turn around orders. We are building relationships with companies that work with adults with unique abilities to help with final production and assembly. Lastly, we have given an extra buffer for when the rewards will be shipped – we hope to send these before but definitely by April 2020 before Earth Day. Any pledge amount brings us one step closer to our goal. Together we can make a huge environmental impact and get people thinking about consuming less. Click the “Back This Project” button at the top of the page or help us spread the word by sharing our Kickstarter page. THANK YOU for your help!
