In an Auckland cafe, a single mum goes for a blind date and encounters a handsome Mexican man named Arturo. While she is falling passionately in love, she discovers a voice and courage to confide in this perfect stranger about her disturbing past. Recalling her love life and decade of living overseas as a Chinese expat, she depicts in graphic details of her childhood, her cultural identity and her previous romances. As she does so, she also begins to confront the pains inflicted from her past and her root.
“It is not that she didn’t remember she once had another sort of life and a past that she tried to detach herself from.
She wanted to say she was from many places. And she wanted to say her past and her origin did not matter to her any more. She had been living in New Zealand for more than five years and was a permanent resident. But she still answered Arturo’s question and said that she was born and raised in Beijing. In the past decade, she had been living overseas. One year in the US, one year in the UK and four years in Turkey.”
This book offers truthful and unique insights on a woman’s experience of love, a mum’s perspective on child and childhood, a young Chinese’s journey to self-realization and freedom.
The manuscript of Back Trip is finished. I’m working with editors to improve the draft to the best level as I can. Later I will engage professionals to format, design and print this book. The Kickstarter funding will cover part of the production cost. I appreciate any support on this project. It’s been an absolute childhood dream of mine to be a published author. I want to thank everyone who supports this project for making an independent writer’s dream come true.
