Rick, a small time crook in Los Angeles, becomes an unlikely hero in the mystical battle between good and evil which has been fought since the days of Ancient China. And Rick is an angry, unfocused fight club member who is barely equipped to deal with…well…anything. Fans of action and comedy who like Shang-Chi, Army of Darkness, Big Trouble in Little China and even ’80s buddy comedies should all find something to like here.
160 pages of epic fights, Chinese Mythology, sinister villains and mouthy heroes.
I’ve always been a fan of genre hopping. Some of my favorite movies, TV shows, and comics have all had genres mixing together. Army of Darkness, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Sandman, Guardians of the Galaxy, and of course, Big Trouble in Little China. But I also loved it when there was more going on. Like, in Buffy, you’re laughing, there’s a jump scare, but then there’s also a poignant moment to reflect on the nature of human emotion. Why not have everything? So I wanted to create a story that was funny, exciting and action packed. But I also wanted to create something that explored human connection, and the relationships we have with family, friends, and partners. And also how anger and violence can destroy those human connections. But it still needed to have roundhouse kicks, magic, monsters, giants and dragons. Truth.
During the soft launch we were going to go all digital. Man, that went over like a palm strike to the nose. So we heard you, and we added a physical printing to the tiers! You spoke, we listened. That did change our budget since we had already launched, so we have to add the shipping costs separately after the campaign via BackerKit.
We’ll also have great ADD-ONS like physical copies of Long Ago and Far Away, Ear Buds: The Podcasting Documentary DVD, The Comedy Film Nerds Guide to Movies, and maybe even a few surprises…
Also, the digital rewards will be fulfilled by ComiXology, so they’ll go seamlessly right into your collection!
It was also important to me to give you the whole story. I didn’t want to break up this project into multiple issues and kickstarter campaigns. That’s why the goal is higher. We’re not doing multiple issues or chapters. This is the whole 160-page story all together in one graphic novel.

Ah, the classics. Budgets and timelines. Since this is my fourth kickstarter, I have somewhat of an idea on what to expect. Still, there are always wildcards and gremlins in the machinery. but working as an indie artist for so long, I’ve learned to overcome obstacles and make adjustments when needed to get to the finish line. Together, I know we’ll get there.
