The Decade Of Women was launched with two powerful inaugural events in New York co-sponsored by Thomson Reuters and 5th Element Group. The first launch was held at a private reception held at the United Nations, where a high-level group of over 170 global leaders announced the elevation of the International Day of Women into the launch of The Decade Of Women solutions and action campaign – dedicated to Completing the Equity Revolution. The second launch followed the day after at the Thomson Reuters headquarters in Times Square, where a collaboratory of 100 innovators, investors, and global leaders designed the solutions path to move the campaign forward. Celebrated across eight billboards in Times Square and now live at DecadeOfWomen.org, The Decade Of Women is bringing forth a #WeUniteWe Pledge as part of a decade-long series of bold commitments to Celebrate, Unite and Exponentiate the progress of both women and men to get to complete the gender equity revolution, and to realize UN Sustainable Development Goal #5 to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls by 2030.
The campaign is distinct in focusing on leveraging the vital power of frontier technologies across blockchain and digital assets to finally achieve economic engagement and financial independence of all women. This will require the unlocking of capital to allow frontier technologies to scale.
At the launch of the #DecadeOfWomen #HackQuantum series worldwide hackathon in Lagos, Nigeria, 5th Element Group announced a strategic partnership with CodeLagos, an initiative of Lagos State Government with bold plans to train 1 million Lagos residents to code by 2020, half of them women.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Lagos State, Mr. Obafela Bank-Olemoh disclosed that the program to date has seen over 31,000 individuals trained, both within the school system and outside the formal school system. The program is currently running in 275 primary and secondary schools across the State – both Government and Private – and in 12 out-of-school centers, with plans to expand to 1,500 schools and 50 out-of-school centers before the end of the year.
An ambitious human capacity development project, CodeLagos, has so far trained over 285 CodeLagos facilitators – most of them teachers from participating schools – who are deployed to deliver the training
in both Government and private schools, as well as in out-of-school centres. The State government supports the facilitators with ongoing training, opportunities for development, and a training stipend.
“In line with the vision of His Excellency the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode to provide an inclusive government, Lagos through the CodeLagos initiative is committed to giving the average Lagos resident skills that will make them relevant in the 21st Century. We are very excited to collaborate with 5th Element Group because together, we believe we can expand our reach, especially to women, riding on our drive to build a State that indeed works for all regardless of gender or other socio-political factors,” Mr. Obafela Bank-Olemoh stated.
During the partnership discussions in collaboration with Blockchain start-up SESO, the strategic partnership will include plans to train 100,000 blockchain developers, half of whom will be women. #DecadeOfWomen will focus on support for training women trainers and incentivising women to enroll for the course. The Partnership’s global launch will take place in New York as a model for other countries and an inspiration for women globally.
Fifth Element Co-Founder Amber Nystrom said, “We are delighted to forge this impactful partnership with CodeLagos in one of Africa’s largest economies, which has such a progressive government. The Decade Of Women is looking forward to CodeLagos setting the vision and pace for others to follow in preparing women for a digital future.”
