My students are amazing! In their short time on this planet, many have overcome SO many challenges and obstacles towards becoming successful learners. Many have learned English as a second language, many face poverty, some have physical or medical disabilities as well. However, they need help to overcome a huge mountain standing in the way of them becoming successful. Most students that I serve this year will have one thing in common, they struggle in reading.
Most studies show that children who are one or more grade level behind in reading by the end of third grade, are at a higher risk for dropping out.
I will largely be working with these children this year. These are the kids that are behind, for whatever reason, and typically do not qualify for special education. These are the kids that need a little extra help to catch up in reading, so that they can go back into their regular classrooms more confident, and better prepared to access the grade level material. By working with these children in small groups on skills from decoding to comprehension, the goal is that I can make a difference in their reading ability.
I have been a classroom teacher for 13 years at multiple grade levels. This year, I am assigned to a new adventure! I will be seeing small groups of children throughout the day, mainly focusing on reading intervention. These are students who do not receive other intervention, such as special education, but are still 1-2 years behind grade level. Time is of an essence in reaching these kiddos. If the students continue to be behind in reading, they cannot access any curriculum in any subject! These kids want to learn! They want to be reading at the same level as their peers! They want to be successful and fulfill their hopes and dreams! They need your help.
Children retain skills better when they feel comfortable in their environment.
I aim to transform my “regular classroom” to a “reading oasis”. I am trying to provide multiple seating options, (bean bags, carpet, stability chairs, traditional chairs) so that I can meet the students where they are at and where they feel comfortable. This will increase the likely hood of the students gaining access to those reading skills that they need to become successful students! The classroom supplies are supplies that will be used directly by these at risk students on a daily basis.
My goal is simple. I would like to create a safe, warm environment that the students feel comfortable learning in. I have an empty classroom. I have a curriculum and experience. All I need is your help in daily supplies and in creating the environment for the students to succeed in! Thank you so much!
