We are a group of 15 registered nurses who will be trekking for 15 days in the Nepalese Alps to deliver Days for Girl (DfG) kits to young women. These women live in remote communities, often several days walk from medical help and essential supplies. The kits we are delivering contain sustainable menstrual products, with everything a woman will need during her menstrual cycle. Each kit lasts about three to five years. Along with the kits, we’ll be teaching the communities about female sexual health in an open and supportive manner.
Many girls all over the world remain in isolation for several days each month during their period, too embarrassed to go to school or leave the house. DfG kits are only the beginning of change around these practices; they provide a gateway to vital conversations around health, safety, and leadership.
Disposable sanitary napkins are useful in developed countries where there are facilities for their easy disposal there is a ready supply. Days for Girls provides washable, long-lasting pads, which makes a lot more sense in remote places like the Himalayas.
We believe that every woman and girl should have ready access to hygiene supplies. It’s a small solution to a simple issue, but it can have a huge impact. The project has the potential to provide millions of women and girls with the supplies and education they need to stay in school, pursue opportunity, and succeed.
Days for Girls envisions a world where menstruation is no longer a cause of shame and taboo. Through volunteers, enterprise, and public and private partnerships, Days for Girls is working to shift how women and girls perceive themselves and are perceived by their communities. We offer girls and women new life choices and are working to spur narrative change, through the provision of sustainable hygiene solutions, health education, and opportunities for income generation.
There are a lot of things that are hard to change in the world. This isn’t one of them. Join us in demonstrating what’s possible when we work together on behalf of women and girls.
We need your support to buy essential supplies such as fabric & soap. We’ll also need to hire a Nepalese DfG educator to accompany us to translate, as well as several local Nepalese people to help carry hundreds of kits through the alps.
