Stress and Bullying – this is something that our teens today experience a lot more than previous generations. The pressure of performing in order to get good marks and perhaps getting into a tertiary institution is very high. Coupled with Social media bullying, learning disabilities and a perception that they need to be perfect causes distress in many young people. We aim to change that.
Helping Teens Cope with life
Being a mom to two special children, I realized how intense their teenage years are. Both have learning challenges, one is ADD and the other ADHD, and on top of these challenges they struggle with the daily pressure of teenage life.
Social media bombards them on a constant basis, telling them how to dress, or behave and what the perfect teenager is. Then of course there is the normal peer pressure from friends – drugs, alcohol and porn are an always constant threat.
I realized that there is no outlet for teens to calm their minds and help them connect with themselves, nothing to help them realize that there is nothing wrong with who they are and how they live. No guidance that helps in coping internally and not having to lash out through violence or bullying themselves.
It is with this in mind that we established Healing Minds, a concept whereby we want to reach out to our teens and through mindfullness and kinesiology help them cope with daily stresses, and grounding them to better handle temptations and peer pressure.
Our aim is to heal the mind, and feed the body the correct nutrients to function properly and help the mind function efficiently without the need for learning disability drugs or any other type of chemical drugs.
We want to help teens realize that they are able to ground themselves when they find themselves in trying and stressful situations, and that no matter their background they are worth of a successful future. We also want to reach out to troubled teens and help them get back their dignity and self-respect.
Kinesiology is able to assist with a variety of ills, some of which are:
Mindfullness can assist teens in the following:
Kinesiology is a holistic system of natural health care which draws on a blend of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Techniques to assess the whole body. It uses muscle monitoring to communicate directly with the body and assess a person’s response to any stimulus. Drawing on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine kinesiology evaluates body function through the muscle-meridian relationship and establishes connections between imbalances, prioritises them and then determines the most effective protocol.
A team of two – we hope to help teens cope with addiction, learning disabilities and social pressures.
With a background in Industrial Psychology as well as business management and marketing, we are a strong team of determined individuals, aiming to decrease stress, depression and violence in our teens.
Our first milestone is to raise R 50,000.00. This would be to get us off the ground with enhancement of training, as well as getting required equipment and to do some marketing.
Dream funding Goal: R 50,000.00 (This would allow us to train our counselors, purchasing meditation mats and pillows, purchase a laptop and audio sound to assist with presentations and mobile meditations, purchase and print uniforms for our staff, it will also allow for some social media marketing and a website)
Tipping point: R 31,000.00 (This would allow us to train our counselors, purchasing meditation mats and pillows and to purchase and print uniforms for our staff, it will also allow for some social media marketing and a website)
We are hoping to launch in Gauteng first and offer our services to schools, as well as individual sessions with one on one attention. This would at first be done at the school or at an individual’s home.
Part of our initiative is to work closely with our schools and to offer underprivileged pupils that are in need of these services free sessions to help them better their lives.
Our second milestone would be R 150,000.00.
This would be to find premises which can be used for our sessions. This would mean that pupils who are unable to connect with us during the week could come to sessions on weekends or after hours on their own time.
This milestone would also enable us to train more teachers/counsellors who could help us in assisting even more children across Gauteng.
Our third milestone would be to raise R 500,000.00.
This would enable us to expand our services to Cape Town and Durban. It would also mean that we could create jobs by setting up trained counsellors in those cities to run their own business and at the same time give back to the community with free services.
We are dedicated parents and volunteers in the SAFRP organisation, we strive on uplifting our youth to build a stronger and happier nation.
