Following a successful second KIVA loan cycle, the Trust Bank “Las Mashitas” are seeking a third KIVA loan. They now have nine members, and two of them are new to the group. These women live in a rural area of El Quiché, in northwest Guatemala. One of Central America’s largest artisan markets is in the area; nevertheless, there is widespread poverty and little opportunity in the rural areas.
Ana is one of the members of the Trust Bank. She is 34 years old and wants to get ahead and help her parents. She is single and supports her family. She was able to get two years of formal education. Ana now has a business travelling to four towns selling traditional Maya clothing. She needs a loan to increase her inventory of huipiles (Maya blouses), cortes (Maya skirts), sashes, and traditional baby carriers, among other things.
Friendship Bridge’s Microcredit Plus program provides Ana and the others with loans and training which, in addition to loans, enriches their knowledge and helps them make better decisions for their lives and businesses. The trainings focus on business as well as health, family, and women’s issues. Through the trainings they develop self-esteem and become empowered.
Thank you KIVA investors for believing in these women.
