The Nether: a fully immersive virtual reality that has replaced the internet in the near-future; a technological wonder that has taken over the real world to the point where most people now work, study, and play there; a world able to fulfil any dream and desire, no matter how dark and grotesque. All you have to do is log in and choose an identity…
With focus on a virtual relationship between the online avatars of two adults, Jennifer Haley’s provocative and award-winning play investigates the boundaries of the permissible in the virtual world, exploring ideas about censorship, morality, personal freedom, and the impact of the internet on our everyday lives.
Since its premier in San Diego, The Nether has been performed all over the world, garnering praise from audience and critics alike, and winning the 2012 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, multiple Ovation awards and Olivier nominations. And, for the first time, it’s now making its way to Scotland…
Theatre Paradok is an Edinburgh based production company, specialising in theatre that experiments with genre, staging, or content. We love the idea of staging The Nether because of its novel, thought-provoking plot and the challenge of creating a larger-than-life virtual world onstage. We are also incredibly excited at the prospect of bringing the premiere of such an acclaimed show to Scotland, and sharing it with new audiences!
