Dublin – Research and Markets has announced the addition of the “European Market Report for TURP Devices 2016 – MedCore” report to their offering.
The TURP device market includes both monopolar and bipolar electrodes. The total TURP market was driven mainly by sales of bipolar electrodes, as urologists continue to transition from traditional monopolar devices to the more clinically efficient bipolar systems.
Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is the leading procedure to treat benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). TURP is an interventional procedure that is performed under anesthesia in which a resectoscope is inserted through the urethra to remove obstructing prostate tissue.
This change was not uniform across Europe, however, as Spain and Portugal were more reluctant to convert to the significantly more costly bipolar devices. A similar trend was also observed in Benelux and Scandinavia; however, this was not due to cost restrictions, but a preference for the monopolar technique by surgeons.
The procedure is nearly as effective as open prostatectomy, but has a lower risk of serious complications such as blood loss, incontinence and impotence.
