Soul Candy Skincare
I am Jessa Mayhew, the Owner + Dreamer + Curator of Soul Candy Skincare, keeper of a gypsy soul and sparkling eyes (according to my husband). I grew up in Pennsylvania about an hour from NYC, daughter of Italian and Russian parents who taught me that anything made by hand is an extension of yourself, that a dinner made with love really does taste better. That is perhaps the most poignant precept of my youth and one that I carry with me today. I think that’s a lot of the reason that Soul Candy is so successful. I put my heart into every bottle. Before I started bottling eco-chic love, I was a health and fitness coach for the US Military for about 10 years.
It was during this time that my passion for healthy, sustainable living really began to blossom. I saw first hand the incredibly positive impact that natural diets and treatments free of chemicals and processing can have on the human body. Forever thirsting for knowledge, I spent years studying and researching and experimenting with natural remedies. When my oldest developed severe childhood eczema, brain candy turned into Soul Candy.
The other half of our family and Soul Candy team, my husband, Ben, has a B.S. from West Point and an M.A. from UTEP. We are a perfect match in so many ways, like the fact that he does my numbers because I hate math – to me, an unfortunately inextricable part of business. Our final military move landed us in Louisville, KY, but the people of Louisville made us stay. Now, I get to educate those same people on self-care and the importance of conscious consumerism. The people that we meet, the glows that we uncover, the bonds we form… that’s what keeps me going.

More about this loan
Soul Candy is a team of sassy, self-motivated herbalists on a mission to change the face of self-care. We handcraft premium, organic skincare free from anything but the best Mother Nature has to offer. Fueled by sustainability and impassioned by all things wild, Soul Candy is helping customers and communities lead healthier, happier lives.
The business was ultimately cultivated as a labor of love. A few members of our family suffer from chronic skin conditions that conventional commercial and prescription remedies were powerless to treat. We found solutions in herbal remedies that were both effective and chemical-free. After a few friends tried it, used it in treatments, and told their friends, people were asking for it faster than we could make it.
The biggest challenge has been becoming an expert in everything! Limited fiscal resources has forced our team to be creative, strategic, and effective. Learning is exhilarating. Sometimes we joke that we’re “building the airplane in flight” as the landscape of our market is ever changing and it takes a lot of hutzpah and vigor to keep up.
Soul Candy’s customer base is diverse in gender, age, and ethnicity. We’ve found success in rehabbing many skin conditions that conventional methods have been unable to resolve. Our brand is heavily driven by the conscious-consumer who uses their buying power to promote positive change in our industry.
Our future goals include challenging the industry status quo, continuing to push the creative limitations, and to show our market that organic beauty doesn’t have to sacrifice luxury or efficacy. We are most proud of the creative collaborations we’ve encountered, the incredible people that we’ve helped glow, and ultimately, our ability to pursue our passion while still being stellar parents.
What is the purpose of this loan?
This loan will help us grow by providing critical capital during our project launch. $5,000 of the $10,000 that we are asking for will be reserved as operating capital. Operating capital will provide a needed cushion, fiscally, to absorb any bumps in the journey. $2,000 will be used for increased ingredient inventory. $2,000 will be used for our 4 month marketing strategy aimed at critical markets through digital advertising (i.e. AdWords / AdSense, Facebook, Instagram, etc.) as well as local mass media such as radio and newspaper. $1,000 will be used for take-and-go packaging for retail sales.
The only expenditure here that will directly impact revenue and profit is the $2,000 for the 4 month marketing strategy. Soul Candy has seen time and again the impact of successful marketing purchases. Every $1 spent on marketing leads us to approximately 300% return in revenue. By those calculations, a $2,000 expenditure in marketing projects at least $6,000 in revenue with a one month lag and one month residual return post campaign.
This loan will provide our business freedom of maneuver, the ability to seize short-suspense opportunities as they become available, and the ability to increase revenue streams through effective marketing. This fiscal surge would be a hugely needed opportunity for us to do the things we have always needed to do, but have been constrained and limited out of in the past.
