Lisa is a certified cat lady, language nerd, tea enthusiast, coffee addict, aspiring potter, professional planner, and Bay Area native. Her professional background is equal parts in the food & hospitality industry and education (middle school and high school). She currently works at Marin Academy, a private high school in San Rafael, coordinating a tutoring program that benefits low-income middle school students in the area.
In her free time she can usually be found at The Potters’ Studio in Berkeley or curled up with her cat Luka. She has visited cat cafes around the world, co-founded KitTea of San Francisco, and is finally embarking on her own adventure with Calico Café.

More about this loan
Hi! Welcome to Calico Café, Berkeley’s first cat cafe and coffee shop!
Our mission at Calico Café is to build community. We are dedicated to finding forever homes for our resident rescue cats while treating our human visitors to a delightful coffee & tea experience. Our cat space is designed so that humans can spend time with the cats in a calm and happy environment before deciding to adopt. We work with Berkeley Animal Care Services to do this. We also like to support local artists.
This August we will be hosting a POP-UP SHOP, and we need your help to make it an awesome reality!
What is the purpose of this loan?
This August I am hosting a POP-UP SHOP in what will hopefully become our permanent home! I do not receive a paycheck over the summer, so it will be virtually impossible for me to host this POP-UP SHOP successfully without your help.
Here is a breakdown of where the funds will go (approximate):
~ $200 – advertising and printing of business cards, etc. ~ $400 – banners and signs ~ $500 – coffee beans for one month ~ $500 – coffee equipment (thermos, filters, chemex) ~ $600 – one month business insurance ~ $600 – food & drink for evening events ~ $1,000 – merchandise to sell in the POP-UP SHOP* ~ $1,200 – furniture for the space
*Having a variety of merchandise (for both cats and humans!) is going to help me appeal to many different customers. I always try to support local and emerging artists whenever I can! The majority of the items we will have for sale are handmade or produced in the Bay Area, and many of these items come from women and/or minority owned businesses.
Years in operation: 6 months – 1 year
A loan of $5,000 helps create a successful POP-UP SHOP experience, which will allow me to make a great foundation for my business.
