I was born and raised in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. I am a son of Africa by way of Jamaica and Trinidad. I am a child of Garvey who told us to be self-reliant and to be organized. I have been an organizer most of my life and have always been independent-minded.
I believe it is consciousness that creates reality and have always been interested in raising African people’s consciousness about their history and culture. I am all about empowering African people and creating a more just society for everyone.
Raw Cotton Rags is part of my vision for raising consciousness and empowering African people who are the inspiration behind our designs. As we grow, it is my goal to become as independent as possible from major corporations. From the sewing of t-shirts to the server that hosts our site, I am striving to reach a point where every cent invested in our company goes into the hands of socially progressive and responsible small businesses. Most importantly, one of the primary reasons for the founding of Raw Cotton is to raise money to fund innovative community organizing programs and direct action campaigns in marginalized Black & Brown neighborhoods throughout America.
