Mission: Comics and Art
I grew up in San Francisco in the 70’s and 80’s, back when it was more funky, laid-back and definitely more affordable. Growing up here, I learned a lot about the values of tolerance, inclusion and compassion and they really helped form who I’ve become. Comic books, Star Wars and reading science fiction also had an huge impact too!
After college I went and taught English in Korea for several years. And then when I came back, the whole Bay Area was abuzz with the Internet Boom and without even really trying I found myself with a tech job.
Then in 2008 the Recession hit and I was laid off. Realizing I had been saying for years that “someone” should open a comic book store in the Mission, I decide I could be that person. So without much savings and the help of friends and family, I opened the store in the Fall of 2009. I love the eclectic mix of the Mission and it’s strong support of literature and the arts. And it’s been great to be able to give back in some way to the City that gave so much to making me who I am. The first few years were really hard and I’ve learned (and continue to learn) a lot! I hope that Mission: Comics inspires San Francisco kids (big & small) to enjoy reading and the arts more.
This loan is special because:
More about this loan
Mission: Comics & Art is not just a store selling comic books. Yes, we’ve got a diverse stock of mainstream and indie comics, and work hard to promote the art form. But it’s also a neighborhood community space for people that love literature and the arts, and host all sorts of community events. We also put on monthly art shows that highlight artists inspired by comics, pop-culture, or have a strong storytelling component to their art, most of them local. We also often host events for visiting artist and writers. It means a lot to me how many people love the shop and what we do here.
What is the purpose of this loan?
Last year I moved the shop to a more central location with a more secure, long-term lease. But the move was expensive and I had to take out a loan. This 0% Kiva loan would greatly reduce the amount of interest I’m paying each month, and would help the business get back on more secure financial feet sooner. Running a small business in San Francisco is really tough, and uncontrollable increases in costs have made it even more difficult in the past few years. So I want to use all tools I can to involve the community in helping Mission: Comics have a sustained long life that can help fosters future generation’s love for literature and art. I’m scraping by right now, but this loan would really help relieve a lot of stress.
Years in operation: More than 5 years
A loan of $10,000 helps Leef pain down a loan with a much higher interest rate and make the business more profitable sooner.
