About GAPURA:
Gapura is a project deeply rooted in world music. Its sound is highly influenced by Balkan music and Flamenco and frequently spiced up by other genres, such as Raggae, Ska, Jazz Manouche, Afrobeat and Organic Trance.
Following a path from which modern music is getting further away, the instrumental line-up is essentially acoustic. The bass being the only electric instrument, the reason behind choosing mostly acoustic instruments is clear: drums, guitars, saxophones, trumpet, flute, percussions of many sorts and many other traditional instruments from all around the world, give a special and not so common touch to the music in an universe filled with electric guitars, synthesizers and electronic beats.
All aspects of the music in Gapura are relevant and full of small details. The lyrics are not an exception. Not wanting to ignore the reality of the Portuguese society today you will find important messages in some of our songs such as “Pensa Verde” or “Mentira”, in “Alma” the Portuguese classics are summoned and “Pela Rua” reminds us of the multiculturalism that boils within Lisbon.

João Nunes, the humble maestro of Gapura, is a multi instrumentalist, composer and street artist, the classic guitar is his main instrument. He also plays transverse flute, alto sax and kalimba with us!
Carlos Rodrigues (Kabeção) is an internationaly known Handpan player, multi percussionist, drummer and sound therapist. Maybe our most travelled member but for sure the only one that can make some incredible sushi!
Isabel Mesquita, from the beautiful Azores Islands is our equally beautiful singer and the face of the band.
Francisco Menezes the sax man. Soprano, Tenor, Baritone, just name it and he will bring the house down with it!
José Cruz, a man of many instruments, plays mainly Trumpet with Gapura but also shows his skills on hulusi, guitar and an occasional percussion.
Pedro Pereira, where the groove comes from, is a long established bass and sousaphone player in the portuguese world music scene.
Sebastião Bergmann, one more drummer and multi-percussionist member in our family completes the formation that will make you dance through the night untill the sun rises!
