Clowns Ex Machina is a troupe of all women clowns creating gleeful theatre together. Under the direction of Kendall Cornell, Clowns Ex Machina’s ensemble shows unearth a fresh, female twist to the ancient art form of clown, using short vignettes, songs, and madcap dance numbers to examine and invigorate the social assumptions which, when turned on their heads, create humor. Sometime broadly physical and sometimes darkly satirical, the work of this troupe of women clowns has been wowing NY audiences since their inception 5 years ago.
Our newest project, Clowns Full-Tilt: A Musing on Aesthetics is opening on November 4th, 2011 at the internationally known NY theatre, LaMaMa, and we are looking for financial support to underwrite this one-of-a-kind endeavor. We have already had a sold-out showing of our work-in-progress showing last May – and now we are working towards a fully realized production – a show with all the trimmings.
Here is how we describe the upcoming project:
“Nonsense and beauty have close connections. — E. M. Forster
In a perfectly empty room, what is Beauty? What is Art? In a roomful of spirited women clowns, can Clowns Ex Machina even hope to answer those questions? In their newest show,Clowns Full-Tilt: A Musing on Aesthetics, Kendall Cornell and her troupe of 8 women clowns flim-flam some lofty answers. They match their humor against the 2-dimensional – flattening themselves into famous paintings, even squeezing themselves into one-dimensional, stock characters of advertisements and TV. Through a series of short vignettes, songs and dances, they create an absurd and chimeric brew of animated great art and shallow cosmetics commercials, as they explore the chains of culture, and the perversion of pure impulse. From an exuberant foundation of sheer folly, arises a sophisticated, multi-media evening of clown theatre.
To help keep the troupe going and this project growing we need your help! Your donations will ensure these women clowns have adequate rehearsal space, double-sided tape for costumes, beautiful stage sets, red noses, technical support, and all other bits and pieces that help these shows come together.
NO GIFT IS TOO LARGE OR TOO SMALL. REMEMBER! A SINGLE SAFETY PIN CAN SAVE A SHOW FROM DISASTER…
