Support a student
With the news that Loughborough is the most popular first choice university for freshers in 2016, we are more determined than ever that talented individuals should not be prevented from pursuing a university education due to their financial situation or background.
For many, the transition from school to university is an exciting time, full of new opportunities and opening doors.
However, with increased course fees, not to mention accommodation costs and textbooks, the financial implications can be incredibly daunting.
The Loughborough University Development Trust gives talented students from disadvantaged backgrounds the chance to further their education, by supporting them through their time at University.
Knowing that they are financially secure allows these students to immerse themselves in their course and focus on their studies, without the stress of struggling to support themselves.
How you can help
The Development Trust supports scholarships as well as the University’s Hardship Fund bursaries, which can be accessed by students who find themselves in unforeseen financial difficulty, helping them to get back on their feet and complete their degree.
If we reach our target of £10,000 we will be able to:
- Offer a full Development Trust scholarship (3 years x £3,000)
- Provide two Hardship bursaries of £500
For every one Development Trust Scholarship awarded, there are a further eight applicants who we are unable to support.
The film at the top of the page demonstrates why it is so important for us to provide financial support to students, and shows how scholars make the most of the opportunities given to them. Many of the recipients of these awards have experienced difficult times, including coming from low-income families or facing bereavement.
Three of our scholars explain why receiving financial support made such a difference to them.
“Coming from a one parent family with a low income, I have always found it hard to fund opportunities and activities, and have worked part-time since I was 13 to try to do so. One dream of mine was to go to university and I have been determined to do so all through college. Sadly however, I thought I would be unable to achieve this dream.
When I heard about the Development Trust Scholarships, I knew there could be an opportunity for me if I continued to work hard and achieve the grades I needed to secure a scholarship. With thanks to your generosity, I am so happy to say that I started at Loughborough in September 2015.

“Before being awarded a Scholarship, it was up to me to fund my education at Loughborough. I believe this scholarship is very beneficial for me in that I know that it will relieve a marked burden and will give me the freedom to apply myself to my studies and not worry about the financial impact on both myself and my family.”

“I believe that by donating to the scholarships you are giving students a tremendous vote of confidence in their potential to excel as a Loughborough University student. I want to achieve a First Class Honours degree so that I can be an ambassador for promoting how great it is for students from disadvantaged backgrounds to receive a scholarship such as this one.
Thank you for supporting the scholarships and students, like me.”
