Komedix opens extremely efficient clinics in underserved Texas communities to address these needs and provide much needed access to quality care.
We are an innovative healthcare solution providing an underserved, aging population with convenient access to highly skilled physicians, nurses and coordinated healthcare teams for primary, preventative, and urgent care services.
Our business model is optimized to thrive in the changing healthcare reimbursement environment that shifts resources towards primary care in the face of a dramatic reduction in the access to quality primary healthcare services.
Komedix was established to address the dramatic imbalance between the demand for healthcare services and the supply of healthcare services, particularly primary care.
Shrinking Number of Physicians as They Approach Retirement
As many as one-third of all physicians in the United States are expected to retire within the next two decades. The American Association of Medical Colleges further predicts that physicians may retire earlier than they have been in the past.
Estimates suggest that by 2020, the United States will face shortages of 45,400 primary care physicians. By 2025, the shortage is expected to reach 160,000 physicians across all specialties.
Exploding Healthcare Services Demand
The number of people older than 65 in this country will double between 2000 and 2030. People of this age require twice as much physician care as do those younger than 65.
The retirement of baby-boom physicians will also coincide with the enrollment of at least 30 million previously uninsured citizens in health coverage through health insurance exchanges and/or Medicaid.
These newly entitled individuals will attempt to find new physicians in a physician market simultaneously losing tens of thousands of experienced practicing physicians, and replacing them with young physicians desiring to work 35 hours a week or less.
The expansion of insurance coverage that is occurring with the implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) is causing current shortages to deepen. After the ACA expansion, the average capacity is expected to be about 80% of the national average.
Texas has among the lowest availability of primary care physicians and other providers in the nation. Many Texas counties have no primary care physicians at all and more than one-quarter of counties have fewer now than a decade ago.
Texas is also experiencing a major population growth that outpaces the nation as a whole.
An additional consequence of this boom in demand and shrinking capacity is that stretched thin physicians lack the time needed to deliver quality care. The shift in reimbursement patterns will favor providers who outperform on quality measures and who can manage cases throughout the healthcare continuum for greater effectiveness and cost control.
Komedix is a physician-driven solution to the coming healthcare crisis as opposed to a hospital or insurance plan driven solution.
Our highly experienced core team of healthcare providers are focused on providing effective solutions to 90% of the healthcare needs of our communities not on the utilization of expensive equipment or denial of service. Also, we have optimized our clinic model for the growth in managed care programs like Medicare Advantage and the ACA managed care insurance programs.
Why Primary Care?
The Results Are In: Komedix Improves Quality and Productivity
We’ve increased the available time for patient care by over 300% and completely eliminated the need for time-intensive activities like HR staffing, meaningful use reporting, and credentialing.
Komedix clinics directly address the new managed care standards. We focus on maximizing the patient encounter and delivering a higher quality of care. This incentivizes physicians to work at our clinics, earns quality bonuses, lowers costs, and, most importantly, improves patient health and care.
A key component to making this possible is the state of the art technologies and tools Komedix uses to create a truly integrated clinical and business environment. Blending the use of proven clinical management software with proprietary information technology and an experienced information technology team, Komedix leverages technology throughout the clinical pathway and within the complex healthcare business environment.
Komedix Healthcare is setting up 5 clinics in underserved regions of Texas first. These will serve as our templates to scale. A basic Komedix powered clinic consists of:
The basic clinic model can be easily scaled to meet the needs of the communities served. Our five clinics will be able to serve up to 20,000 primary care patients with the basic clinic model, delivering adequate time and attention to patients along with higher quality outcomes and reimbursements.
Komedix Healthcare will have all 5 clinics up and running by the end of 2017. Clinic #1, in New Braunfels, Texas, has already been established and is fully credentialed by all major payors.
The clinic is slightly ahead of our patient acquisition schedule with over 750 new patients and growing. Response from these patients has been overwhelmingly positive.
The clinic and the providers have all been credentialed with Medicare, Tricare, Humana, Aetna, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Allegian, United Health Care and Cigna.
The Komedix Healthcare Regional Resource Center has also been established and is operational.
The resource center provides the IT backbone for all current and future clinics, as well as centralized billing, collections, and all human resource capabilities including a full spectrum of benefits.
We have also established an insurance arm, OnePoint Agency, to help build managed care patient panels for each clinic. To speed the filling of these clinic patient panels, we have partnered with Allegian Health, a regional insurance plan.
