The United Nations calls them “the world’s most persecuted minority.” They live under a never-ending struggle to survive; humans with no human rights:
The Rohingya of Burma.
For decades, hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims have lived in the Rakhine State, near Burma’s border with Bangladesh. Facing a mounting humanitarian disaster, they are victims of persecution, violence, human trafficking, and a growing part of the 10 million refugees around the world who are told they do not belong anywhere.
On top of this, Burma is considered one of the countries with the highest risk for natural disasters in Southeast Asia. Just last month, Burma was struck by heavy flooding from monsoon rains, which affected more than 210,000 people.
They are fast-becoming one of the world’s forgotten people. With hundreds of thousands of them in camps or stranded at sea with no access to the fundamental needs to sustain their lives, the ethnic Rohingya are in desperate need of emergency food, shelter, medical aid, and YOUR help.
Every year, United Muslim Relief Houston hosts a city-wide dodgeball tournament to raise funds for a humanitarian cause. In the past, these tournaments have hosted over 200 people and raised thousands of dollars. This year’s efforts will focus on the Rohingya of western Burma. All proceeds raised will go to United Muslim Relief’s operations in Burma, which provide food, water, clothing, and shelter to alleviate the Rohingya’s suffering.
In the past year, United Muslim Relief has been working to deliver life-saving emergency food aid to Rohingya communities in Rakhine state. Last Ramadan, we expanded our efforts and are distributing aid across Burma and in camps across Asia.
With your help, we can provide the Rohingya with enough aid to improve the current condition of their lives.
Calling all Houstonians! Sign up to participate in this year’s dodgeball tournament as a spectator or competitor.
