Would you like to see pictures of your city at night taken by the astronauts orbiting the Earth?
We want to create a Google maps style map of the world at night so anybody will be able to access it. NASA has a database with almost half a million pictures taken by the astronauts on the International Space Station. The problem is that the pictures are not organized or located. You would take over 300 pictures of a weekend on Paris so imagine how many would you take if you were in space. This is what happens to the astronaut that not only take hundreds of photographs where they carefully select the frame, focus and exposure but some times they set their cameras to take pictures automatically while they work on their experiments.
Organizing the pictures with a computer is non-viable. Computers need very complicated algorithms to interpret photographs. The human eye knows right away if the camera was pointing at a city or just at the stars, that’s why we created Cities at Night, a platform with 3 apps where anybody can help, looking through beautiful pictures taken from Space.
Thanks to the diffusion from NASA, ESA and CSA-ASC 130,000 photos in the database were tagged, more than 2500 were located and 1000 geo-referenced.
There ISS images are new data scientist have been unable to access at the moment. There are some research groups studding the impact of light pollution on human health by studding the epidemiology of some kinds of Cancer. This kind research has been done with black and white colors so far. This project will make the scientist able to work with color data so they will be able to study if blue light illumination is correlated with some illness. These data will also be use to measure the human activity so we will be able to document the cities grow. This will be the base on new energy efficiency studies that will make our cities spend less money using better illumination so we will be able to recover the visibility of some stars.
– If we reach our first goal we will develop our own platform to host the map so anybody can access it. Right now we have a beta map on Google Maps Engine but that service will disappear on January 2016. We will program an alternative of our own that will offer: • A place to store the geographic data in a web-based environment. • Powerful visuals for inspecting and analyzing the pictures. – We will improve the design of the app so they are nicer and easier to use.
If we reach our second goal we will be able to do much more!
– Develop a tool so the new pictures will be added to the map automatically. Right now that’s manual. This will make a nice feedback for the contributors that will be able to check their founds online in a short time.
– Improve the apps so they will feel like a game. You will win points trough-classifying pictures and your achievements will make you earn badges. You will win badges by classifying 100, 200, 300 or 1000 images, but you will also get a different one if you are the first person to find a city or if you find pictures from 5 different states on the USA. We will also create a ranking with the greatest contributors and you will be able to share your achievements trough Facebook and Twitter.
– We will calibrate the images using astronomy techniques to make them images useful for science researchers. To do so we will buy the same equipment the astronauts are using (cameras and photographic lens). Every camera is different and you have to get that into consideration to correct the final image and get proper data for scientists.
