Our proposal is to set up within Birmingham City Centre, delivering workshops in venues across the area. The workshops will be aimed at 2 different groups; A. Young adults within the LGBT community ( 16-25 year olds) and B. LGBT Family Support (Same Sex Families)
The view is to roll out a series of workshops all with Protective Behaviours underpinning the strategies and skills being explored.
These way 2 significant groups within the LGBT community will have access to this advice guidance and support.
Our aim is to support young LGBT people and LGBT Families by using the Protective Behaviours approach that is relevant and realistic and equips individuals with advice, knowledge, strategies as well as empowering them to make life choices, decisions and develop awareness and personal confidence as a means to challenging stereotypes, prejudice and personal wellbeing and feelings for those who struggle with dealing with their sexuality & community acceptance.
PBC have developed many services and provisions and are currently working together with other organisations on similar projects across the UK and within the Birmingham area.
All current programmes share a similar goal by enabling children, young people and parents to recognise and trust their feelings, stay in control and making safe choices, building networks of support, improving relationships and communication, developing problem solving strategies to help cope with difficulties and gaining awareness of their rights and responsibilities.
PBC are also currently developing ideas to work with the Rainbow Trust in Northern Ireland alongside some of our Protective Behaviours trainers who are based there.
By offering this support this should support those dealing with mental health issues and particularly those finding it difficult to integrate into society because of dealing with their sexuality.
PBC anticipate that each group attending the 4 workshops and having a follow up mentoring session will have achieved the following:
• Have the appropriate tools enabling them to be their own first line of support preventing them from victimisation and prejudice
• .Acquired the strategies and behaviours approached in a simple, flexible and effective way, which is inclusive and accessible to everyone enabling individuals to be empowered and have a valued sense wellbeing
• Developed methods to help protect from victimisation and abuse
• Understand the Themes, Core Concepts and Strategies of the Protective Behaviours Process and how to apply these within their community, life choices and within situations.
• Gained quality assured processes to maintain the integrity of the Protective Behaviours process.
• Understand that they have the skills to keep themselves and others feeling safe with an approach to life without the fear of harm and victimisation
