Reclaim Your Power and Equality is a grassroots organization that strives to help create a world free of diversionary ideas like consumerism, sexism, racism, homophobia, violence and inequality. We are a group that focuses on the influence that the arts and culture have through the diversity of our city, and try to exemplify culture amongst our communities. We strive to empower all people and we are driven by the vision of equality of all sexes and gender. One of our ideas of engaging the people of our communities towards a path of equality and solidarity is focusing on permaculture in Miami. We feel strongly that gaining an ecological lens through a human perspective would ultimately give us the ideas we need to develop sustainable ecological design in our communities. We contribute our strong feelings about our project to a greater vision that we have about equality, self-sustainability, and guerilla roof top gardening.
South Florida soil is usually sandy and fruits and vegetables need richer nutrients, because of this, our community garden will consist of raised soil beds. 8-10 8’x5’ garden beds will be constructed by laying down cardboard (biodegradable) as a base and cinder blocks will provide short walls. After filling each bed with nutrient rich soil we can begin to plant our gardens. These gardens will consist of some fruits, vegetables, and herbs that can be locally found and grown, but not limited to, strawberries, pineapple, peppers, bell peppers, tomatoes, romaine lettuce, carrots, legumes, pigeon peas, lima beans, beats, cabbage, etc. Nurturing these plants will be done in an organic setting, therefore we will be putting a budget aside to invest in compost and organic pesticides (if necessary). Most health problems are caused by lack of nourishing foods, by introducing community gardens into our communities we can help promote better and healthier lifestyles.
Permaculture is the development of agricultural ecosystems intended to be sustainable and self-sufficient. It’s about ecological engineering and environmental design which develops sustainable architecture and self maintained systems modeled from natural ecosystems. When you take care of the Earth, you take care of the people. Opening services for people to access those resources are extremely necessary for their existence. Sharing the surplus of healthy natural systems will provide elements to nourish others by governing our own needs and resources to push for moral principle. Permaculture is designed for the future.
