EVENT: Women Startup Challenge
“Where you live impacts your health”
Benefiting: GeoHealth.US
Event: Women Startup Challenge – Ends Friday 5/29 @ 1:59pm US ET.
Please support the first annual Women Startup Challenge, launched by Women Who Tech and in partnership with Craig Newmark of craigslist and craigconnects. This event is raising money for innovative women-led ventures that are committed to solving problems for people, businesses, and the planet. If we place in the top 10 of this event, we’ll have the opportunity to pitch and win $50,000. That would be a great boost!
OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE, OPEN SOURCE HARDWARE, OPEN DATA
We’re seeking to fund the production & deployment of 1,000 Arduino-based sensor kits that we’ve designed using Open Source Software and Open Source Hardware. We call them EnviroPods™.
ENGAGING STUDENTS, EDUCATING CITIZENS
We’ll deliver the EnviroPod kits, with instructors, to schools & makerspaces and assist students & adults to complete a hands on STEM project. By putting together the Arduio-sensors and seeing them monitor air quality, they’ll learn about sensors, environmental exposure & have contributed to a crowd sourcing project.
EnviroPods™ detect particulate matter, volatile & combustible gases. They are solar powered so they don’t need batteries and use the pre-paid SMS to send data to the cloud.
Our website, GeoHealth.us is live with historic data from US EPA, National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health. Through this crowdfunded project, the sensor collected data via EnviroPods will give a comprehensive picture of communities throughout the US & its impact on our well-being. Please see the GeoHealth.us explainer video.
KEEPING AN EYE ON THE BIGGER PICTURE
Our goal is to help ignite kids with a sense of curiousity & excitement about STEM. We also wish to share hyperlocal info with those interested in the impact of their environment on their health. With your help, we believe these are goals well within our capabilities & benefits communities across the USA.
What is not to love about this project?!
We’re a team of makers, data scientists, and teachers. We believe that the more you know, the more effective you are at managing your environment & your well-being. Read my post on “The CrowdRise Campaign for GeoHealthUS: What, How, and Why It’s Important“
