More than 3 Million Britons are malnourished or risking their health because they do not have enough to eat and yet on average 16.1 Million people eat out in the UK every day. We can turn eating out into helping out through an initiative known as transaction based giving.
Funds raised through partnership restaurants in the UK will be ditributed to local foodbanks and homeless shelters in order to relieve food poverty. In order to get the project off the ground I need funding for governance costs and the printed materials to be distributed to the partnership restaurants. Once the scheme is up and running a small deduction will be made from donations to ensure the organisation is self sufficient and continue indefinitely. 141food is a subsidiary of WYB, a non profit organisation as set out in its memorandum and articles of association and is run by volunteers in their spare time.
We are all the same, we all get desperate for something sometimes. Access to an adequate food supply is the most basic of human needs and rights. Every day UK foodbanks meet parents who are skipping meals to feed their children and find themselves forced to consider stealing to stop their children going to bed hungry. Foodbank use is not rising because people are taking advantage of free food, its rising because more people are facing situations where they cannot afford to eat. Many households only ask for emergency food help as a last resort when other coping strategies have been exhausted. People who use foodbanks speak of the shame and embarrassment that they feel and the courage they had to find just to walk through the door.
