The average lifetime cost for an individual with autism is $1.4 million. The average lifetime cost for an individual with autism and an intellectual disability is $2.4. Forty percent of individuals with autism also have intellectual disability. These figures indicate that the yearly cost of autism is an estimated $236 billion a year in the United States alone (The Journal of the American Medical Association Pediatrics, 2014). I am starting a not-for-profit fund to cover the costs of high quality, research-based interventions to children with autism spectrum disorders, children with learning disabilities, and children struggling with learning. My mission is to provide research-based, transformative interventions globally, and to as many children as possible. I am asking for help setting up the fund and getting this project off the ground. I met with a contractual lawyer in NYC; he advised that my set-up costs will be approximately US$8,000. I am in the process of collecting the funds in order to register the non-profit and make this project a reality. I have worked in the field of applied behavior analysis since 2005. In that time I have worked in Hong Kong, New Zealand, Nebraska, and New York City. In the last ten years I have seen substandard “interventions” as well as life-changing, transformative interventions. I currently work in a center in New York City providing research-based interventions to children with and without diagnoses. The interventions we implement are the only ones I have seen that enable children with autism to learn to use language functionally and meaningfully. I want to provide more children with access to these research-based interventions that will transform their lives and enable them to have meaningful interactions with their world. Thank you for your time and commitment to helping us transform the lives of more children!
