Archived: FREE:CODE:NATION: to collate the best free resources across all learning formats and mediums

iCrowdNewswire - Jun 23, 2015

Welcome to FREE:CODE:NATION, so far we are a two person team…
I’m Terry, originally from Ireland, but moved to the US a few years ago. I’ve got an MSc in Computer Science and have been working professionally as a programmer and developer for the past 5 years and spent the 5 years before that in Tech support and Dev Ops.

…and my name is Erin, I am a qualified teacher and social media advisor with a post graduate diploma in e-learning. I am also currently learning the web dev ropes working through some of the materials we are planning to build into our curriculum.

We are launching this campaign because we know quite a few people who would benefit from it and we haven’t been able to find anything comparable to recommend that didn’t cost an arm and a leg.

Don’t get us wrong, there are some awesome resources available for people who know what they are looking for, but for the person who got laid off and wants an industry change, the kid who cant afford college but still wants a great career or the wannabe globetrotter seeking remote friendly skills. It can be hard to know what direction the industry is heading, what technologies are relevant and whats on its way out. Thats where FREE:CODE:NATION steps in.

The idea is to collate the best free resources across all learning formats and mediums into a structured 16 week program teaching the skills required to be an effective competent web developer. A group of mentors (actively working professional developers) will offer support and guidance via email and hangouts. After that we will help our students to build a social presence, resume, portfolio and search for positions that are a good fit for their skill level, location, etc.

We believe that FREE:CODE:NATION has the potential to change lives, having personally experienced the freedom, flexibility and security that a career in programming can offer we want to put that opportunity in a highly accessible and supported format within reach of those who are financially or socially disadvantaged, in need of a career change or just want to learn something new.

Show me the money….

So we are looking for $10K to get this thing off the ground, here is where it’s going to go:

– Technology: $3000 (Hosting/Email, Hardware & Software)
– Design & Development: $2200 (Graphic Design & Dev Support)
– Marketing Effort: $4800 (flyers/promotional/advertising)

We are aiming to run this enterprise in a not for profit manner, and as such we will dedicate as much of our time and ability free of charge as we possibly can.

We have some incentives on offer to help sweeten the deal for the altruistic, check them out in the side bar —->

Please help spread the work by tweeting, liking and sharing our project.
