Nebula Youth Skateboarding Project

iCrowdNewswire - Jun 21, 2015

 Nebula Youth
 Skateboarding Project

Nebula works with kids in developing communities but facilitating the learning,
transfer of values and practices required to be a good skateboarder to the classroom

Introduction
In the 2014 Annual National Assessments (ANAS), South African learners from Grades 3-7 achieved less than 40% in Mathematics with grades 9’s achieving a mere 10.8%. Nebula has identified that one of the root causes for such results is the lack of academic and personal support received by learners in underserved communities such as Gugulethu and Valhalla Park. Through innovative exposure to skateboarding, tutoring and holistic support Nebula creates opportunities for young people to achieve success and reach their potential.

Who We Are
Nebula, a social enterprise, was started by Rayne Moses in 2012 with the vision to have young people live their dreams. With his passion for skateboarding and a degree in Business Administration from TSiBA Education, Rayne began the Nebula Youth Development Programme in Gugulethu, Cape Town – a developing township striving to overcome the challenges of crime, gangsterism and violence. Nebula is now a growing community of young skateboarders who are committed to living their dreams and succeeding at home and in school.

What We Do
Nebula facilitates the learning and transfer of values and practices required to be a good skateboarder to the classroom. This includes balance, commitment, discipline, focus and awareness. Through dialogue, reflection, journaling and tutoring after every skate session, the Nebula programme supports the overall growth of individuals, leading to increased motivation towards school, improved attendance and academic performance as well as a higher degree of self-awareness. Nebula aims to sustain its programme through its clothing brand, an annual series of events, skate lessons and programme fees.

Our Impact
Nebula plans to grow its capacity to expand and impact 30 learners from Luzuko Primary in Gugulethu, Cape Town participate in our after-school programme every year. Nebula has grown its capacity to expand and impact hundreds of youth in Valhalla Park, Da Noon, Gardens and Hanover Park by recruiting youth within these communities and the Nebula programme. Thus, we create opportunities for young people to become trained and experienced facilitators and tutors. In 2013, we witnessed a 33% improvement of grades received in Mathematics and English from 80% of our participants.

Our Plans
Nebula plans to impact the lives of 300 learners by 2017. Its programme will be implemented in the above mentioned communities in Cape Town, making use of the underutilsed skateparks and facilities. The success of these projects will lead to the construction of the Nebula Skate Plaza creating employment for 15 skilled but unemployed youth.
