As a Muslim American woman living in these times, I feel this is a vital story to tell in a compelling multi-media way. We can never forget the concentration camps in Europe’s backyard that held Muslims, and led to their genocide in our lifetime.
That’s why I’m fundraising for a new multimedia journalism project. Next month, I will travel to Bosnia to do a multi-media project on the 20-year commemoration of the Srebrenica Genocide, where over 8,000 Bosnian Muslims were massacred in a matter of days. Their remains were spread across mass graves to hide the crimes against humanity.
About 15,000 people tried to escape through 60+ miles of Bosnian forests in what is referred to as “The Column.” They traveled in a “column” to avoid land mines and ambushes. Many died of starvation, dehydration, mental illness, exhaustion, or suicide.
I am retracing their steps & will complete the entirety of the 63 miles on foot alongside genocide survivors who walk in honor of lost loved ones, and protestors demanding for war criminals to be prosecuted. I will tell their stories and the stories of those who were killed in the Srebrenica Genocide via a multi-media project. The funds raised will go towards a local team who has been personally affected by this tragedy who will help with translation, transportation, and documentation of this historical event.
