Veterans sacrifice a lot in terms of mental, physical, and emotional exertion when they serve their country. In addition to the veteran themselves, their family, community, and other loved ones are often directly impacted as a person serves. One of the benefits for veterans upon their discharge or release from service is the insurance options available for them by the government’s Veteran Affairs or VA.
The number one insurance coverage option for veterans is the health benefits covered by the United States government. Often referred to as VA health care, these medical benefits will depend on the specific needs of an individual veteran and are subject to the government’s approval and guidelines. Generally, medical benefits for veterans will include any care needed to help a person through an injury or illness, preventative care, rehabilitation or other necessary improvements for functionality, and all-around health and wellness enhancing the quality of life.
In some cases, VA health will cover surgeries, kidney dialysis, immunization, nutrition, and mental health, but there are other medical needs that are strictly not covered by VA Health. These include cosmetic surgery, abortions or abortion counseling, experimental medicine, out-of-network inpatient or outpatient care, and more, as defined by the VA benefits website.
Similar to health insurance, VA also offers disability compensation packages that are a tax-free payment for veterans who were injured or fell sick when serving. The disability insurance covers both physical and mental illnesses so long as they were developed as a result of service or were present before service but made worse with duty. While the VA website outlines certain common conditions like PTSD for mental health issues, the bulk of medical necessities is determined upon filing a claim.
Some important benefits that not all VA packages cover are branches like vision and dental care. In those cases, supplemental insurance may be worth it to maintain quality of life. Popular supplemental insurance options may include the dental and vision as well as life insurance, critical illness coverage and accident insurance.
One popular choice for veterans is the use of Medicare in addition to VA benefits if eligible for both. Because Medicare will not cover costs incurred at a VA facility and VA will not cover costs incurred at a Medicare facility, the two can work in tandem for veterans who qualify — either by being 65 or older or by having a qualifying disability.
If a treatment isn’t included at one or isn’t conveniently located nearby, a person may be able to receive care at the other, effectively covering a person and sometimes dependents in the case that they can only get to one facility or the other for care.
