The new report by Procurement Resource, a global procurement research and consulting firm, looks in-depth into the costs involved in the production of polycarbonate. The comprehensive report analyses the production cost of the material, covering raw material costs and co-product credit, equipment costs, land and site costs, labour wages, maintenance costs, financing charges, and the depreciation cost. The extensive study describes the step-wise consumption of material and utilities, along with a detailed process flow diagram. The report also assesses the latest developments within the polycarbonate industry that might influence the costs of production, looking into the capacity expansions, plant turnarounds, and mergers, acquisitions, and investments.

Polycarbonate is an organic chemical compound belonging to a group of thermoplastic polymers, which contains strong carbon groups in its structure. It is known for its durability and maintenance of colour over the period of time. Due to its tough and strong abilities, it is widely used in the construction industry, as well as the electronics industry, in products like electrical insulators, sound walls, and more. Some of the other applications of polycarbonate include bulletproof glass, aircraft parts, bottles, CDs, green houses, Lego, and more.
Due to its extensive application, the polycarbonate industry faced minor inconveniences during the pandemic’s initial months. Its extensive usage has made it one of the most important chemicals during the pandemic. Its downstream products are being widely used in the health industry to fight COVID-19. One of the applications of polycarbonate, which has widely been in demand is polycarbonate sheet. They are widely used in industries like construction, electronics, automotive, and more. With the rising demand and a steady supply chain, the polycarbonate industry is expected to grow with a compound annual growth rate of 3.4% till the year 2025. These factors are expected to influence the production cost of polycarbonate.

The production cost report by Procurement Resource assesses the production of polycarbonate via bisphenol-A and carbonyl chloride or via bisphenol-B and diphenyl carbonate. In one of the most common methods to produce polycarbonate, a solution of bisphenol-A and sodium hydroxide is formed, which is further mixed with carbonyl chloride dissolved in an organic solvent such as dichloromethane. Then, polymerisation is performed in the presence of a catalyst. Polycarbonate is formed in an inorganic layer, and the aqueous layer is then removed. The obtained product is evaporated, which results in the final product as polycarbonate.
