Terephthalic acid is an organic compound, which appears as a white solid. It is majorly used as a precursor to the polyester PET, which is further used to make clothing and plastic bottles. It is also used to manufacture polyester coatings for general metals, appliances, automotive, industrial maintenance, coil coatings, and more.
Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for terephthalic acid did not drop due to its applications in the chemical as well as the pharmaceutical field. The supply-demand chain has been maintaining balance with steady growth patterns. Meanwhile, BP Zhuhai Chemical Co. Ltd., a purified terephthalic acid producer, has recently received approval from Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange as a designated warehouse from March 20th onwards. This will further allow internationalising of the Zhengzhou exchange’s PTA future contracts. This contract for the exchange of PTA was proposed by Zhengzhou in mid-January with four other contract options, including white sugar, cotton, methanol, and rapeseed meal. These factors are expected to influence the production cost of terephthalic acid.

The production cost report by Procurement Resource assesses the production of terephthalic acid via p-Xylene. In this process, p-Xylene acts as a feedstock through a catalytic oxidation process. Before being processed into the oxidation reactor, p-Xylene is treated with an acetic acid solvent and a catalyst solution. Within the reactor, p-Xylene is oxidised to form terephthalic acid, but most of the product is precipitated. This crude terephthalic acid is then sent for purification.
