ROCK HILL, SC – Truckers have two important trucking tax deadlines coming up on November 2, 2020. Trucking companies need to file their third quarter IFTA report and truckers who first put a semi on the road in September 2020 need to file their IRS Form 2290.
The International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) requires nearly all owners of commercial motor vehicles that travel interstate to file a quarterly report detailing all their mileage and fuel purchases. Their IFTA tax amount is determined by their mileage and fuel consumption in each IFTA jurisdiction.
The IRS Form 2290 is used to calculate heavy vehicle use taxes (HVUT) for all commercial motor vehicles with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds that travel on public highways. Truckers must file their Form 2290 at the end of the month following their vehicle’s first use month (FUM). So if they put a truck on the road in September, their Form 2290 deadline would be October 31.
This year, October 31 falls on a Saturday, so for both IFTA and Form 2290, the deadline is the next business day, November 2, 2020.
