NHPCO advocacy affiliate recognizes members of Congress who have supported hospice
(Alexandria, Va) – The Hospice Action Network, the advocacy affiliate of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, is pleased to announce the winners of the 2020 Hospice Action Network Angel Award. This award was created to recognize select members of Congress who serve hospice and palliative care patients and their families through their efforts to support the vital mission of hospice and palliative care in caring for patients facing serious or life limiting illness and use their platform to amplify the voices of patients facing serious and terminal illness and their families.
The award recipients are as follows:
The honorees expressed their appreciation for the recognition.
“Coronavirus restrictions have made hospice and palliative care even more sensitive. That’s why I joined with Senator Brown to ensure these patients get more time with their loved ones. In these socially distant times, we all can better appreciate precious moments with family. I’m honored to be chosen as one of HAN’s Angel Awardees, and I appreciate the work HAN and NHPCO do on behalf of hospice and palliative care patients and caregivers,” Senator Shelley Moore Capito said.
“As Wisconsin patients and families consider end of life care decisions, they should be able to focus on what’s important – spending time with their loved ones. That’s why one of my highest priorities has always been improving access to quality hospice and palliative care, including in our rural communities,” said Rep. Ron Kind. “I am honored to receive this recognition from the Hospice Action Network, and I will continue to work to support the incredible services our hospice care professionals provide to patients every day and ensure all Wisconsinites have access to compassionate care.”
“Having practiced medicine for more than 25 years, I have seen first-hand the amazing work of health care professionals in hospice and palliative care,” said Rep. Roger Marshall, M.D. “I admire the Hospice Action Network and organizations like the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and how they can collaborate with members of Congress to improve both quality and access to care, especially for Kansans living in rural communities. This recognition is a true honor and I look forward to continuing to work with NHPCO to improve end-of-life care for both the patient and their families as it is a vital piece of our health care system.”
“I’ve consistently fought for quality care across the health care spectrum, and part of that effort has meant fighting abuse and neglect in hospice and palliative care settings so individuals near the end of their lives can focus on time with their family and loved ones,” said Senator Rob Portman. “There’s more to do to support quality in end of life care, but I appreciate the work that organizations like NHPCO are doing to partner with us in improving the care landscape and I’m honored to be this year’s Hospice Action Network Angel Awardee.”

I will never forget the care and effort hospice care professionals put in to take care of my mother during the end of her life or the opportunities I’ve had to help working families as a hospice volunteer,” said Rep. “As someone who stepped back from my own career to take care of my parents and in-laws as they got older and developed serious health problems, ensuring that our seniors have comprehensive access to hospice and palliative care is an issue that has always been close to my heart,” said Senator Jacky Rosen. “It is an honor to be recognized by the NHPCO for the work I’m doing in Congress, and I hope to continue efforts alongside them to increase access to quality care for patients in need.”
