WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (January 24, 2024) – John A. Lurvey, who developed a reputation for handling complex and catastrophic claims over 37 years of litigating all areas of tort and contract liability, recently became a full-time mediator with Upchurch Watson White & Max.
“We warmly welcome John Lurvey to our ranks. John’s broad litigation background across a spectrum of sophisticated commercial practice areas positions him perfectly to undertake his new role as a neutral mediator,” John Upchurch, UWWM’s CEO, said. “He is skilled at surfacing the underlying interests of the parties and finding an approach that respects the needs of each side.
Mr. Lurvey grew up in South Florida and earned his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Florida. After law school, he began his career in Miami, where he worked with some of the most highly regarded lawyers trying cases in Florida. He represented plaintiffs in the early years of his career, and then began handling cases for the defense.
In 1991, Mr. Lurvey was approached by a leading regional defense firm, and joined its Broward office. Four years later, he moved further north to grow the firm’s West Palm Beach office, becoming a partner in 1998 as a result of his success there. John was ultimately elevated to one of only eight of the firm’s named/equity partners in 2003, and was the managing partner of the West Palm Beach office for almost 20 years.
He represented product manufacturers, road and bridge contractors, general contractors, power generation, trucking companies, design professionals and various individuals of celebrity during his 37-year career. Before becoming a full-time mediator, Mr. Lurvey handled complex contract cases, sexual molestation and harassment claims, workers’ compensation exception cases, electrocution claims, building collapse, crane and heavy machinery, boating, negligent security and intentional tort claims, and, over the course of his career, he was selected to serve on several catastrophic claims trial panels for national companies.
Over his career, Mr. Lurvey had a reputation for litigating his cases with passion, commitment and hard work. He brings the same attributes to his mediation practice and will assist those participating in the mediation process with “goal-oriented, focused and significant effort.”
