Having a baby can be a magical thing for those that want one. However, even those that want a child realize that pregnancy isn’t always the easiest. A lot of sleepless nights, pain, brain fog, nausea, and exhaustion come with carrying a baby for nine months.
Thankfully, there are ways to make your pregnancy easier, so you can focus on caring for yourself and your soon-to-be child.
Some days, it may be all you can do to get out of bed and eat something while you’re pregnant. Exercise may seem like a pipe dream for most of it. However, exercising can help you feel better when you are pregnant — if you can get over the first hurdle of actually going through with it.
Some of the benefits of exercise while pregnant involve reducing pregnancy symptoms like insomnia, constipation, back pain, excess weight gain, swelling, and chances of having to get a C-section. Additionally, you can reduce the risk of common complications like gestational diabetes and preeclampsia.
You don’t need to do anything intense. Simple walks around the block, swimming, stationary bike rides, strength training, and yoga are all great options. It is recommended that up to 30 minutes of exercise a day is best when pregnant, which can be broken up into five or ten-minute intervals throughout the day.
If you can’t do 30 minutes starting out, that’s fine. Try for ten minutes and work your way up as needed. Doing a little bit at a time is better than doing nothing. Even taking trips up and down the stairs with laundry can count towards your daily exercise goal.
Sometimes you just can’t avoid uncomfortable situations when pregnant, such as flying to visit family or for work. While this is perfectly safe, as you can generally travel up until 35 or 36 weeks of pregnancy, it isn’t always comfortable.
However, there are ways to make your life a little easier during these travels. Instead of driving yourself, consider getting someone to drive you, like a chauffeur service. That way you can relax in style.
This is easier if you live in or are traveling to a big city, such as Los Angeles, where you can get an LAX airport transfer to or from the airport as well as a chauffeur service to drive you around. This reduces any anxiety you may have about driving, makes getting to your destination easier, and you can relax, nap, or do more work while someone else drives.
To make the flight more comfortable you can pay for multiple seats, fly business class, or request extra legroom to be more comfortable. You can also bring items that might make the trip better, like comfortable shoes, neck pillows, and a blanket. A mask can also help reduce your chances of getting a cold or being exposed to strong smells that might make you nauseous.
Being pregnant can be brutal on your body. You will gain weight, may feel bad most days, and could even lose some teeth. Making sure that you are getting all the nutrients you need can reduce those symptoms and help you and your baby come out the other end healthy and happy.
Some common vitamins and minerals you may need are folates, calcium, fiber, iron, vitamin D, DHA, and iodine. You will also want to talk with your doctor throughout your pregnancy to see if you are experiencing any other vitamin deficiencies.
While you can get many vitamins by consuming fruits, dairy, and vegetables like citrus, yogurts, milk, and leafy greens, sometimes you just can’t get yourself to eat enough. If you can’t eat enough to provide what your body needs, you may need to look into purchasing some supplements for the duration of your pregnancy. They can help you to feel better and give you the energy you need.
You can also talk to your partner about helping you meal prep with foods high in these nutrients so they are available whenever you are hungry to quickly heat up and eat. Meal prepping promotes healthy eating, as it makes it just as easy to eat something healthy as it is to eat a bag of candy or chips.
Going outside and getting sunlight also helps, especially in the case of vitamin D. So when you are exercising, or just want to sit, consider moving near a sunny window or outside on a bench to get a little boost of sunlight to help you feel better.
This one is very important. Everyone handles pregnancy a little differently. Some people seem like they are made to have children, while others experience every possible side effect of pregnancy. This is just because of genetics and the way your body handles pregnancy.
No matter what anyone tells you, having a bad pregnancy doesn’t have much to do with what exercises you do, what you eat or the nutrients you take. While these can help, and definitely make a pregnancy a bit easier, they aren’t a magical cure that will make the pregnancy all sunshine and rainbows.
If you aren’t able to exercise 30 minutes a day, just do your best, and eat what you can. Sometimes, it will take all you have just to eat something moderately healthy, and that’s alright. Stressing about what you should be doing is only going to lead to more problems. Instead, feel satisfied that you are giving it your all.
