The disease progresses fastly the median survival is 3 to 5 years, and only 20% of patients are alive five to ten years after symptom onset. Despite the poor diagnosis, there is considerable variation in the survival rate, and up to 50% of people with ALS live for more than eight years from the onset of the first symptoms.
