Open Door Technology is proud to announce its 30th Anniversary this year, in the month of April.
Originally a technology consulting business formed by President and CEO Malcolm Roach in 1992, Open Door began working with accounting products like Platinum Software and Epicor. Initially supporting key customers in the local Alberta Market, including the Calgary Airport Authority, the Calgary Stampede, and BMW Monarch, Open Door continued to grow even as Epicor suffered significant financial losses in the late 90s. As time went on, Roach understood that Open Door would need to seek alternative offerings for the company to continue to grow.
“My background as a Chartered Accountant gives me a strong understanding of business operations,” explains Roach. “When I first started Open Door, I did it because, during my previous position as a Senior Manager in the Information Systems Group at KPMG Peat Marwick, I realized the limitations with mid-market accounting software implementations. I knew there was a niche we could fill with consulting services dedicated to that market. As things began to shift with Epicor and their financials, it became evident that we would need to pivot to a new software platform.” That platform was Navision Software.
Introduced in February 2000 to Navision, a modern accounting platform developed in Denmark and Germany, Open Door saw the product flourish in North America, leading to its acquisition by Microsoft in 2002. As a leading-edge platform, Navision was transformational for growing mid-sized businesses by bringing sophisticated ERP capabilities to the SMB market, and it eventually became Dynamics NAV in 2005.
It was in 2002 that Open Door first became involved in the equipment rental sector when Roach and his team identified a gap in the industry.
“It was very obvious to me that supporting the oilfield services companies would be an integral part of our future success,” says Roach. “The oilfield companies were starting to get involved with equipment rentals, and their needs were underserved. We built our equipment rental technology on Dynamics NAV and started to sell it through the partner channels. We had success there for almost 13 years before deciding that a more dedicated approach was required. In 2015, we went direct and started to market and sell ODT Rentals to customers across North America while continuing to support our reseller channels.”
In 2017, Microsoft asked Open Door to convert their ODT Rental product from the on-premise Dynamics NAV platform to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central — Microsoft’s new cloud-based ERP solution for the mid-market. Open Door became one of the first ten third-party business applications in Microsoft AppSource, and remained the first and only equipment rental solution for Business Central for many years. They later developed and launched additional apps in AppSource, including their Equipment Service app, an Advanced Payables app, and their Field Service Ticket app, all as an extension for Business Central.
“Partner with the right software publishers, build high-quality applications that serve a specific need, and deliver them directly and efficiently has been our model for the last 30 years,” says Roach.
As for the future of Open Door and its range of ODT applications, the company continues to invest heavily in product development, leveraging the Microsoft suite and focusing on the cloud. With significant efforts in digital marketing, Open Door continues to expand into markets outside North America, including Europe and Australasia, while working tirelessly to maintain its leadership position in the Dynamics 365 Business Central space. The focus for the next 30 years is on expanding the power and capabilities of their solutions to serve the market better, freeing customers from the heavily customized, outdated, and costly on-premises solutions of the past.
“The vision of Open Door Technology is simple and unchanged since our inception – to integrate people, processes, and technology. This vision has led us to become a technology leader in the equipment rental space, and beyond” explains Roach.
For 30 years and counting, Open Door has provided superior technology and outstanding service to over 200 clients and will celebrate their longevity and success throughout all of 2022.
