R134A is a refrigerant of the 100 series and R134As is the chemical name. The “R” stands for refrigerant, alternating with its specific name HFC-407C. R-134A (1, 1, 1, 1, 2-tetrafluoroethane) is a kind of refrigerant which does not contain chlorine atoms and does not damage the ozone layer. It has good safety properties (non-flammable, non-explosive, non-toxic, non-irritating and non-corrosive). Its refrigerating capacity and efficiency are very close to R-12 (Dichlorodifluoromethane, Freon). Therefore, it is regarded as an excellent long-term alternative refrigerant. R-134A is currently internationally recognized as the best environmentally friendly alternative to R-12. It does not destroy the ozone layer at all. It is an environment-friendly refrigerant recognized and recommended by most countries in the world, and it is also the mainstream environment-friendly refrigerant at present. It is widely used in the initial installation and maintenance process of new refrigeration and air conditioning equipment. R134a is very low toxic, non-flammable in the air, safety class A1, is a very safe refrigerant.
R134A, also known as tetrafluoroethane (CF3CH2F), is a family of HFC refrigerants. Since the discovery of the harmful effects of CFCs and HCFCs as refrigerants on the ozone layer, these refrigerants have been used as substitutes.
It can be mixed with silicone-based lubricants. It is used as fuel in airsoft and air-pressure weapons. Other common applications include the blowing of plastic foam, cleaning, solvents, propellant release and pharmaceuticals. It can also be a refrigerant used in sanitary pipes and freezers.
As a refrigerant for medium to high temperatures, R 134A should not be used in low temperature applications. At low temperatures the pressure is lower than at R 12 and at high temperatures slightly higher than at R 12. It also loses some capacity compared to R 12 in low temperature applications.
Because it is flammable, BMW and Mercedes introduced carbon dioxide R744 (CO2). However, the operating pressure is four times higher than with other refrigerants, so retrofitting seems impossible. At £70, no one uses R134A in retrofit applications. The R7 44 has an operating pressure of about 70 pounds.

As a very effective and safe alternative to R-12, it is mainly used in most areas where R12 refrigerant is used, including: Refrigerators, freezers, water dispensers, auto air conditioning, central air-conditioning, dehumidifier, cold storage, commercial refrigeration, ice water machine, ice cream machine, refrigeration condensing units, refrigeration equipment, at the same time also can be used in aerosol propellant, medical, aerosol, insecticides aerosol propellant polymer (plastic) physical foaming agent, and magnesium alloy shielding gas, etc. R-134A can be widely used as refrigerant in automobile air conditioning, refrigerator, central air conditioning, commercial refrigeration and other industries, and can be used in medicine, pesticide, cosmetics, cleaning industries.
Packed with cylinders, the specifications are 200g, 250g, 300g, 13.6kg, 100kg, 400kg, 800kg, the filling coefficient is not greater than 1.1kg/L, must be stored in a cool, dry and ventilated place, avoid sun, rain.
Everything has a good chemical stability, however, because of its water soluble than R22, so adverse to the refrigeration system, even if there is a small amount of water, under the action of lubricating oil and so on, will produce a acid, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide or to metal corrosion effect, or “copper” effect, so everything on the system of the dry and clean even more demanding. R134a has no mutual chemical reaction on steel, iron, copper, aluminum and other metals, and only has a slight effect on zinc.

If the target environment is hot and your used car is light, the R134A is fine. If you live in a hot climate and want to drive a low-capacity car every day and the air conditioning upgrade worked well, you might want to consider sticking with the R12. You can add an ester oil to work with R12 or R 134A. The more firmly the modernised system accepts the refrigerant, the less one has to worry about how the system works.
It has a low sliding temperature and uses a direct expansion and flood evaporator system. R-513A is the closest to R-134A for new and retrofitted systems. It has a lower GWP and refrigerant class A1 and can replace R-134A for stationary systems.R-450A The R-450A is an azeotropic refrigerant mixture containing heavy fuel oil refrigerants designed to replace R-135A for commercial and industrial refrigerators, air conditioners and refrigerators.
It has an ODP of zero and a GWP of 4. HFO 1234YF (Hydrofluoroolefin) – This is a replacement for the R 134A with low GWP and is intended for use in mobile air conditioning systems in the automotive industry. Its GWP is more than 300 times lower than the R134A.
R12 and R134A are not the only games in town. There are other EPA-approved refrigerants like Hot Shot and Freezing 12 that you can find. Each has its own cult following and needs its own EPA-approved chargers.
Under the new rules, R134A will be banned from new household refrigerators and freezers from 1 January 2021.
