The Premier League is known as the most competitive football league in the world. It has been the home of high-octane football, superstar managers and players, and cries and joys ever since its inception in 1992. It is the only league in Europe that has a highly-competitive setup of top clubs and more than just the usual 2-3 contenders for the title. The Premier League has witnessed great eras involving great clubs.
Here are the top five Premier League teams of all time:
#1 Manchester City
Manchester City is the first Premier League team to reach the Holy Grail of a 100-point season. City, under Pep Guardiola, broke numerous other records while playing their beautiful trademark of passing football which is undoubtedly breathtaking. Manchester City’s 2017/18 haul broke the record for the most points ever recorded in a Premier League season. This included the seasons that came prior to 1995/96, when each team played 42 games instead of 38. The number of records that City broke was outrageous, setting benchmarks for the most away points (50), most wins (32), most consecutive wins (18), most goals scored (106), and best goal difference (79) which also included reaching the 100-point mark. They retained their title in 2018/19 with the second-highest tally ever, 98 points, edging out Liverpool in one of the league’s most exciting climaxes.
#2 Arsenal
The only team to remain undefeated in English football’s top flight since Preston North End achieved the same feat in the inaugural football league back in 1888-89, Arsenal’s invincibles were a joy to behold. With 12 draws throughout the season, the 90 points that Arsenal amassed isn’t close to the all-time highest points tally in the league but the achievement of remaining unbeaten means that they simply have to be considered as one of the four greatest Premier League teams of all time. Their undefeated league runs ultimately stretched for 49 matches when they were prevented from reaching their half-century by Manchester United.
#3 Liverpool
German manager Jurgen Klopp crafted the current Liverpool side over a few years through some serious painstaking toil. The team had mounted a serious challenge to win the crown of the 2018/19 season as well but just fell short of winning it despite losing one game. It was also the season when they won the UEFA Champions League. However, this year, Klopp’s men were not to be denied. Despite both failing to become another Invincible or even reaching 100 points (both targets that seemed achievable at first), the Reds, led by Henderson are one the greatest football teams to play in the Premier League and are one of the best football teams in the planet right now. Liverpool also won 32 games and fell just one short of a century.
#4 Chelsea
The Chelsea side that rising star Jose Mourinho fashioned in his debut season in greatest premier league teams English football, 2004/05, were fashioned around a virtually impermeable defence and an ‘us against the world’ mentality. That Chelsea only conceded 15 goals and kept 25 clean sheets, records which stand to this day, is almost beyond belief. However, despite their defensive heroics, Chelsea were certainly no slouches going forward either. With the mercurial trio of Didier Drogba, Eidur Gudjohnsen, and Frank Lampard scoring 51 league goals between them, The Blues finished the season with 95 points, at that time the highest in the competition’s history.
#5 Manchester United
Last but not the least, the 2008/09 title-winning side who contained a plethora of Premier League greats including greatest premier league teams Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra, Edwin Van Der Sar, Carlos Tevez, Dimitar Berbatov, and, er, Frazier Campbell, ultimately the achievements of United’s 1998/99 treble winners are unsurpassed and, probably, unsurpassable. Though Manchester City won an incredible domestic treble last season, United’s version replaced the League Cup with the consolation prize of the Champions League.
