Are you thinking of renovating your roof to make it look more modern and energy-efficient? If so, you should be aware of the most popular roofing options available today.
From mixed materials and concrete shingles to solar reflectance and Energy Star-rated materials, there are a number of roofing trends that are only expected to increase in popularity in 2021. According to Eric Brown of A to Z Roofing, one of these centers on concrete.
“Today’s homeowners want a perfect blend of style, texture, and durability,” said Brown. “Modern concrete roofs fulfill all these needs while providing an appealing aesthetic.”
When most people imagine concrete roofing, they think of warehouses or schools. These days, however, roofers can install concrete tiles, which look very similar to composite shingles but offer much more durability. Available in a wide array of colors, including black, brown, and copper, these modern roofing options have become incredibly popular among homeowners in Colorado, thanks to their versatility and impressive durability.
Another popular roofing trend revolves around the use of mixed materials.
“Combining shingle and metal roofs is one of the latest architectural trends,” said Brown. “It allows homeowners to get the aesthetic of composite shingles while enhancing the roof’s functionality and durability.”
Modern homeowners are pairing metal roofing such as zinc, steel, aluminum, or copper with a blend of composite shingles. This compelling combination creates an intriguing exterior while boosting the roof’s ability to stand up to weather and Father Time. This separates the home from the rest of the neighborhood and protects it from large storms, hail, debris, and so on.
While mixed materials are providing compelling options for homeowners, reflective, environmentally friendly materials are also a big trend in modern-day roofing.
“In the roofing industry, the term ‘green roof’ or ‘cool roof’ refers to roofing systems that are essentially better for the environment,” said Brown. “When roofs are constructed using lighter hues such as beige, white or other lighter shades, less heat is trapped within a building.”
This solar reflectance can significantly reduce cooling costs. At the same time, because they are engineered to last a long time, cool roofs can lower maintenance costs. Utility providers will also offer rebates to property owners who opt for cool roof installations, creating another financial incentive that has made cool roofs one of the growing trends for 2021.
Synthetic materials are also a big trend to watch for in the coming year. Traditional asphalt shingles have always been popular because of their affordability. On the other hand, slate, metal, shake, and other sturdier materials are typically much more expensive. These days, homeowners are finding they can have a similar look for a much more affordable price.
Made out of recyclable materials such as rubber and plastic, synthetic shingles are today’s best choices for more sustainable, eco-friendly roofing. The material can be designed and shaped to look like more expensive options at only a fraction of the cost.
According to Brown, as homeowners become more and more cost-conscious, energy-efficient roofing is becoming increasingly popular.
“The roof has always been the frontline of shelter and defense for a home,” said Brown. “These days, it’s become the frontline for energy conservation as well. More and more homeowners are adding solar panels to store more natural energy and reduce their utility bills. The panels can generate energy to power a home, even during overcast days.”
In addition to solar energy, homeowners are choosing Energy Star-rated roofing, which has a higher amount of solar reflectance. One of the most difficult quality assurance standards to achieve, Energy Star’s energy efficiency ratings ensure that the roofing materials have been thoroughly tested for thermal performance in sunlight. Only when roofing products are proven to reduce cooling and heating costs can they be considered worthy of a coveted Energy Star rating.
Whether it’s solar panels, solar shingles, or Energy Star-rated roofing, more and more modern homeowners are demanding energy-efficient roofing products for their homes.
