Levin & Perconti welcomes new partners Dov Apfel and Seth Cardeli to the firm, marking an expansion of the firm’s practice in birth trauma and obstetrical malpractice claims.
Apfel is nationally recognized as an advocate for children with cerebral palsy and other neurological and intellectual disabilities, having litigated these matters throughout the nation for more than three decades. Apfel is the author of a landmark law review article that helped set the standard for how cases involving cerebral palsy are handled by lawyers representing families in birth trauma cases across the United States.
Cardeli is well-versed in the many complex legal and medical issues surrounding birth injury claims. As a trial attorney, he has represented families across the country who have suffered as a result of medical negligence and malpractice, including parents of children injured during labor and delivery.
Both attorneys are based in Maryland and have represented clients in 25 states. They are joined at Levin & Perconti by their longtime paralegal Kim Martel, who was recently honored with the American Association for Justice (AAJ) Paralegal of the Year Award for her work in the investigation and litigation of tragic medical malpractice cases involving brain damaged children and her many contributions to both the legal profession and the community.
“We are thrilled to have this team joining the firm,” said founding partner Steven Levin. “Their advocacy sets the standard for handling these complex and difficult cases in a way that truly makes a difference in the lives of injured children and their families.”
In combination, over the course of their careers, the new partners and Levin & Perconti have secured more than $1 billion in verdicts and settlements for their clients.
Apfel and Cardeli join Levin & Perconti at a moment of extraordinary growth for the Chicago-based personal injury firm, which last year obtained more than $74 million in total settlements for its clients, placing it among the top 5 in Illinois, as ranked by Jury Verdict Reporter. Levin & Perconti won more settlements of $500,000 and up than any other law firm in the state. Among those cases was one in which the attorneys secured $14 million for a client who suffered a birth injuries to mother that left the child with intellectual disabilities and cerebral palsy.
Levin & Perconti holds multiple Illinois state records for top verdicts and settlements in various categories, including the highest-ever jury verdict under the Illinois Nursing Home Care Act and the largest-ever settlement for an injured boat worker under the Jones Act.
