Who is Behind the Development of Esports in South America?

The esports industry is developing in an uneven manner in the world. South America lags behind Europe and China but every year the region takes small steps forward. While there are development problems connected with the infrastructure and inability of many families to buy up-to-date computer gadgets. However, many countries have already made a claim about themselves on the esports stage (Brazil, Argentina, Peru).

In this article, we will consider organizations, individuals, and events related to esports in South America.

Organizations and Clubs

There are more than enough clubs and organizations on the South American stage, however, there are not so many collectives that have achieved any peaks. And it is not about competition but about financial possibilities. To assemble a roster of five players, you need to be ready for plenty of expenses that seem impossible for the majority. There are many talented gamers among youngsters that will stop at nothing for a chance but going to computer clubs or buying a new computer is irrational use of money for them.

As for esports teams with achievements, the list is not huge:

  • FURIA Esports is a Brazilian CS:GO brand founded in 2017. Its CEO and founder is Jaime Pádua. The ascent to the top started when the captain’s role was taken by the mastermind, Andrei arT Piovezan. The team made it to Top 30 in the world rating and now holds the fourth position.

  • MIBR is a Brazilian organization registered in 2003. The brand had gone through a plethora of changes until in 2018 the players declared their return on the professional stage in CS:GO. The team always wins Top 5 at various tournaments.

  • beastcoast is a Peruvian organization that appeared in 2017. The tag became popular when the players won fourth place at ESL Гамбург 2019 in Dota 2. Later the team had some changes. The captain chair was occupied by MoOz and Stinger got inactive. The latest achievements of the team were their victory at Realms Collide and the fifth position at ESL One Birmingham 2020 – Online among the American division.

Individuals

Many people tried to promote esports in the region. Some of them are representatives of classical kinds of sport. For example, in 2018 Javier Alejandro Mascherano told that he would develop the industry concluding a partnership agreement with eSports Planet. However, there is no more information about this.

Many professional players (Stinger, Bardo, Lelis) told in their interview that their results helped them to solicit support from sponsors and fans. Before that, everything was done with the help of personal finances and also the collective efforts of the team. All people, as well as CIS at the beginning of the 2000s, did not believe in the industry. But that has already disappeared here while it will not finish soon in South America.

Events

Due to the current situation in the world, we do not hope that we will see LAN tournaments soon. However, the organizers of ESL One Rio 2020 have another opinion. They are sure that the infection will have been reduced by November and the recurrent epidemic will not make the states close the borders again. Valve has changed the system of invitations to the tournament, so the old invites are invalid now. The teams have to fight with each other in regional qualifiers to get a quota to the event. The holding place is Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
